Internet Explorer Losing More Market Share

  • More bad news for Microsoft since rumors of the 15,000 potential layoffs coming next month.
  • Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s famed browser continues to lose market share. Stats from NetApplications in November shows that while IE fell below 70% dominance for the first time ever, Firefox grew beyond 20% market share for their first time.
  • As we saw earlier this morning with Google’s Android for Netbooks, Chrome will certainly begin to chip away at IE as well. Apple’s Safari standard and mobile browser will continue to grow with Apple’s growth in the computer and mobile markets.

Safari Users Rejoice: Google Gears Is Available

  • Google just announced that Google Gears is now available for Safari users.
  • Safari users can now browse some of their favorite sites while offline.
  • Some of the supported sites are Wordpress, Google Docs, and Zoho Office, among others.

Is anyone who would actually utilize Google Gears using Safari?

  • Loads fast, displays pages fast. Benchmarks here.
  • Handles code and errors very well. Benchmarks here.
  • Incognito mode lets you open a new browsing window that won’t leave cookies or URL/search history. Safari has this, Firefox doesn’t.
  • Easy to import Firefox bookmarks, and all keyboard shortcuts are the same.
  • Start page gives you quick access to pages you frequently visit.
  • Treats each tab as a separate process and allows you to see how much memory/CPU power each is individually using.
  • Draggable tabs — drag a tab out of the browser and it turns it into a separate browsing window.

Google Chrome: Better Than Firefox

  • Mashable writer Mark Hopkins says that Google’s new browser, Chrome (download here) beats Firefox “in every way” he’s tested
  • Found Chrome uses 80% less memory than Firefox
  • Has none of the problems found in Safari, Apple’s browser also built on Webkit, such as click delays and formatting issues
  • Has more usable space than other browsers
