MySpace Music launches

  • If you are an avid MySpace user, (I haven’t logged in 9 months and counting) then you should be very excited about the launch of MySpace Music last night.
  • It has a nice looking new face, music search works well and the music streaming playlists are a big step up even if the player looks like my Real mp3 player from 1997.
  • The experience is still a little cluttered and music pages still move as sluggish as ever, but this will be a big hit nonetheless amongst people already on MySpace.
  • More than anything, what is impressive about this project is the structure of deals that needed to come together to make this work.
  • MySpace put in $120m of their own money, signed up the 4 biggest record labels in the world to have a stake and participate, lock in major advertisers to support the streaming, they even had to raise an outside round of capital to get this thing off the ground, and all without a CEO.
  • Most important, MySpace is trying to get it’s foot in on the future of the music game, which is less about record sales and more about tickets sales, promotional dollars, and merchandise.  (Merch, Ticket Sales coming soon)
  • MySpace can become an all inclusive Ticketmaster with the ability to push promotions and throw their own shows. This is an area they will move towards and they will win my opinion if they don’t charge me a fuc***g convenience fee.
  • Well done MySpace, I still think right now, this is more of just a feature for your already existing customers, but on the deal front, bravo, because you have a real chance to own the future of the music biz.
