Android Powers Up with GameBoy Emulator

by John Jorgensen on November 3, 2008

  • AndroidBoy is a Nintendo GameBoy emulator that’s officially available in the Android Market app store right now.
  • One of the iPhone’s first apps was a similar GameBoy emulator that was never approved by Apple and required a jailbroken phone.
  • This is a good example of Google Android’s more liberal, open stance when it comes to apps allowed on their app store versus the iPhone’s.
  • Sure, but is this taking it a little too far? While emulators are legal, the games themselves have copyrights. I wouldn’t be surprised if this got canned eventually.

iPhone App Store to Opera Mini: NOPE

by John Jorgensen on October 30, 2008

  • Add one more app to the list that have been denied by the iPhone App store due to replicating features already on the phone: Opera’s mobile browser, named Opera Mini,
  • The browser has seen a lot of traction on Windows Mobile devices.
  • MG Siegler of Venture Beat notes that the ban might be a good thing since multiple browsers on the iPhone could “hamper the user experience” and make it hard on app developers who, as of now, only have to make their apps integrate with Safari.
  • I disagree. Even with Opera on the phone, app makers could still base browsing functionality on the Safari-Webkit platform if they wanted to. And just like desktops, a “default browser” option could be added into iPhone’s settings to choose which browser to launch when opening links.
