verified

  • Third party applications available in the Facebook App Store will be segmented into “Great Apps” (these are major apps such as iLike), “Verified Apps” (Facebook inspected and appproved), and then the rest.
  • To apply to be verified, developers must pay a $375 fee. They are expecting around 10% of the current 48K apps to be ‘verified’, which would be an extra $18M in incremental revenue to Facebook. Yay! More Servers!
  • This will certainly help lift up apps hidden under the pile of garbage offerings found in the Facebook community.

Kaixin001, China’s New Social Network Power Clone

by Jason Wilk on October 16, 2008

  • Kaixin001 is the hot new social network in China aimed at white-collar workers who sit in front of their computer 9-10 hours a day.
  • In just a couple months, it has gained 7.5M users and has tripled Twitter’s traffic.
  • Xiaonei is the leading social network in China, aimed at college students.
  • Kaixin001 has gained its success by cloning their design as well as ripping off the most popular apps on Facebook like:
    • FriendsForSale
    • iLike
    • WhereI’veBeen
  • No telling what will happen with the startup market in China, as investors are still bearish on websites that aren’t supported by much revenue and potential buyers in the marketplace just aren’t there yet. I lived in Beijing in 2006, and when I investigated what kind of work enviornment and talent China was dealing with in terms of design and program ability, it was very weak. Doesn’t look like much has changed.

iLike Launches Platform to Embed Playlists Anywhere

by John Jorgensen on September 17, 2008

  • iLike, the popular Facebook app that lets users put streaming music playlists into their profiles, has released its own platform allowing developers to integrate playlists virtually anywhere on the web.
  • Announced partners include eVite, Blogger, Typepad, Slide, Flixster, SGN.
  • Platform is based on Java/HTML and not Flash, allowing for tightly integrated functionality.
  • Example: On eVite, invitees can hand-pick songs for a playlist of suggested music to be played at the party/event.
  • iLike, which is partnered with Rhapsody’s mp3 store, limits users to streaming 25 full songs per month, after which they have to subscribe to Rhapsody to hear full songs. Otherwise, only 30 second clips will be available.
  • iLike receives no cut of the revenue from users who subscribe to Rhapsody. The company says the partnership’s value will be in increasing iLike’s reach and resulting in more members/pageviews.
