Chrome: Not an OS Replacement

by John Jorgensen on September 3, 2008

  • Henry Blodgett published a Yahoo Finance article stating that Chrome, Google’s new web browser, is “an operating system for cloud computing,” and said that “the need for Windows and other operating systems is declining.”
  • Mashable writer Mark Hopkins argues the opposite, pointing out Bill Gates spoke about the benefits of client/server computing almost 20 years ago.
  • Hopkins also points to Microsoft’s WebTV and XBox as two examples of how Microsoft has been “blurring the lines between the network and computing” for years, concluding that Microsoft’s cloud strategy is far ahead of Google’s.
  • Hopkins goes on to note that Chrome is merely an application, and that as an app it needs an operating system to run within.
  • Hopkins concludes that with web app shortcuts, Chrome is “finally putting equal footing to web apps awith desktop based applications,” but it’s not a desktop replacement.
