Palm Pre Demo Units Arriving At Sprint Stores

by Jason Wilk on May 17, 2009

  • As we move closer and closer to the June 7th release date of the Palm Pre, many have wondered when the phones will begin showing up to Sprint stores. According to InsideMobile,  Sprint (NYSE: S) is already shipping Palm Pre demo units to some Sprint retail stores. The demos are apparently under strict lockdown and come packaged in generic Palm Pre retail boxes. I went to my local Sprint Store in Hollywood today, the in-store manager said they were expecting their training units any day now. (The photos below get larger once clicked on)
  • Sprint is likely going to start showing off the Palm Pre in stores following the Palm Pre advertisement that’s speculated to hit the Wall Street Journal this Tuesday. Whoever sees the advertisement first, take a pic and send it over to Jason@tinycomb.com

  • Maybe to Apple, the recession hasn’t quite come yet. Their earnings on Wednesday, impeccable, and now they have cut 1,600 retail employees in a cost cutting effort. The retail arm of the company now employs 14,000 full-time equivalent workers, down from 15,600 according to a  recent filing with the SEC.

Expansion of the Retail segment has required and will continue to require a substantial investment in fixed assets and related infrastructure, operating lease commitments, personnel, and other operating expenses. Capital asset purchases associated with the Retail segment since its inception totaled $1.5 billion through the end of the second quarter of 2009. As of March 28, 2009, the Retail segment had approximately 14,000 full-time equivalent employees and had outstanding lease commitments associated with retail space of $1.3 billion. The Company would incur substantial costs if it were to close multiple retail stores and such costs could adversely affect the Company’s financial condition and operating results. -Apple SEC Filing

Sprint Employees Begin Training For Palm Pre Launch

by Jason Wilk on April 10, 2009

  • Rumors of a mid-April/late April/May launch of the Palm Pre just might be on point. An email from Sprint today provided by PreThinking says, “Employees can expect training to start in April as well as multiple communications to get them excited and ready to help our customers.” If employees are getting trained for a launch, one would assume that the phone is not far off.

Google Confirms AdWords Layoffs

by Jason Wilk on March 26, 2009

google-layoffs

  • It’s official, Google’s not immune from the bad economy and shrinking ad budgets. Google is cutting 200 employees today, the company now confirms. Google executive Omid Kordestani, the company’s sales chief, wrote in the official Google blog that the layoffs are almost primarily in the sales and marketing operation, better known as AdWords.  A tipster had told Gawker, the company had “overinvested” in areas where it had forecasted growth. Here is what the internal employee at Google said prior to the official announcement:

A friend of mine in the San Francisco office’s AdWords division (who wants to remain nameless) was laid off this morning. She also said there were 200 people total. They are still on payroll for two months and have the opportunity to apply for other jobs within the company. If they don’t have another job at the end of the 60 days they get a severance package.
