  • A new eBook reader is about to hit the streets to take on the Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s eReader. Foxit Software will soon begin shipping their eBook reader, the eSlick, which will sell for $229 when it first goes on sale in January from Foxit’s site.(The Kindle costs $359, Sony’s $399)
  • It is about the length of a medium paperback,  but only 0.4 inches, so it’s thinner. Its 6-inch, 600-by-800-pixel “electronic paper” screen is made by the same company that makes the Kindle’s. It offers the same ‘easy on the eyes’ features such as text resizing and lighting that make the new eReaders so enjoyable to read and rival reading a real magazine or paper.
  • The eSlick comes in 3 different colors, comes with 2GB of memory (SD card clot), long battery life (8,000 page turns) and a headphone jack (Yep, it’s got an MP3 player on it). The downside is that at first, it won’t come with wireless. If you are someone who wants to read the paper in the morning on your eReader, you will have to plug the usb into the computer and fetch it. The Kindle (for $10 a month), will automatically push the paper straight to your Kindle when it’s ready.
  • All in all, if you don’t plan on being a daily Kindler, then the eSlick will certainly be a good fit for you. This should worry Amazon as they have had the chance in the past to license out their software to others. Now, they will have to face competitors like these who will stop at nothing to get into the ever-growing market. Should Amazon have focused on protecting their proprietary technology or should they have embraced competitors and licensed it out?

  • Stanza is iPhone’s free e-book reader app that has been downloaded more than 500,000 times says parent company Lexcycle.
  • In just 3 months, Stanza was downloaded more times than Citigroup estimated Kindle would sell all year.
  • The display comparison on the Kindle to the iPhone is a world of difference. However, for consumers that already have an iPhone, or are trying to decide how they can afford a music player, phone and an eReader, the iPhone is a tough choice to say no to.
  • The Kindle is $359 + Shipping right now with Amazon for the rest of the holiday season. With the Kindle 2 delayed until early Q1, buying a competitive e-reader for the holidays may be as simple as the click of a button in the iTunes App Store.
  • Stanza currently only offers books in the public domain and that are DRM free, unlike the Kindle which offers newspaper, magazine and bestseller download capabilities.
  • Lexcycle says they are beginning to work with publishers to get those kinds of deals that Kindle has struck up. Their CEO Marc Prud’hommeaux says ”Once we’ve got that kind of deal done, you’ll be able to do everything on the iPhone that you can now do on the Kindle: browse, purchase, download and read a book without interacting with your computer in any way.”

amazon-kindle-2

  • Amazon is missing the holiday season for the launch of their Kindle 2.0
  • The bigger, slimmer, better Kindle, which will also release an ever larger screen student version in mid 2009, will be launching first quarter Q1.
  • Should Amazon be so keen on not licensing out the platform to other manufacturers to fend off competitors and focus on increasing distribution instead? Considering that eBook readers will be a huge market play for many manufacturers trying to enter the game including Sony, it might be more worth it for Amazon to play the part of iTunes and not the part of the iTunes/iPod package deal. Not to mention (and this is a big mention), Amazon is not a proprietary software company, an OS one nonetheless.
