by Jason Wilk on November 29, 2008

  • When consumers shop online, Amazon is still the destination of choice, but Walmart and Target are steadily catching up in the online e-commerce game says JP Morgan’s Survery
  • 50 percent of online shoppers this year will shop at Amazon, compared to 35 percent at Walmart.com, 32 percent at eBay, 27 percent at Target.com and 12.5% at Sears.
  • If trends stay on path, Walmart.com will pass up eBay in total number of online shoppers this year as well as total revenue. More proof eBay is on the outs.
  • In terms of total spending, 44% of consumers say they will be spending less this year compared to 33% who said the same thing last year.
  • If you are really trying to save this winter, I recommend 101 Great Gifts To Make.

  • A startup called Billing Revolution has announced that their ‘one-click’ mobile shopping technology is now available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry applications.
  • Sign up to pay for things through Billing Revolution and an Amazon-like one-click payment option will appear in any e-commerce application.
  • This is a good system for appplications that are selling larger items or expensive virutal goods. Billing Revolution charges a 3.5 percent transaction fee plus 50 cents per transaction to developers. Not good for $1.00 transactions.

  • MySpace COO Amit Kapur revealed at the Web 2.0 Summit that they are working on their own own virtual gift service as well as a payment system that MySpcae App developers can add to their offering.
  • The virtual gifts thing is a no brainer, but the payment system will be interesting. Does it mean developers will be creating apps that are good enough to charge for? Or does the payment system mean they will have an in-house ecommerce infrastructure for rolling out their own Merchandise, Concert Tickets, and Ringtones applications that are supposedly coming soon. I think the latter.

  • Greenfield Online owns Ciao, a successful price comparison and shopping site in Europe that brings in 26.5 million unique visitors per month.
  • Microsoft outbid Quadrangle Group LLC.’s bid of $426 million, with an offering of $486 million.
  • John Mangelaars, of Microsoft, says the acquisition “makes the company a fantastic asset to the future of our search offer. Integrating Ciao’s capabilities into Live Search will provide a strong launchpad for our commercial search offer in Europe and enhance our e-commerce offering on MSN.”

What other benefits will Microsoft see with this acquisition?
