Make Your Voice Heard During Presidential Debates w/ MyDebates

by John Jorgensen on September 17, 2008

  • MyDebates.org, a site co-launched by MySpace and the Commission for Presidentail Debates, will let people take an interactive role during the approaching Presidential debates (starting with Palin/Biden on Sep. 26).
  • Users will be presented an “Issues Quiz,” where they rate the importance of 14 issues (economy, gun control, environment, education etc). Your stances will be compared with those of other Americans, as well as the stated positions of the candidates.
  • Your “stance profile” can be embedded on blogs and major social networks.
  • HQ streaming video will let you watch the debate in real-time with “Issue Icons” that display whenever one of the major 14 issues is being discussed. After the debate, you’ll be able to instantly jump to the point in video playback where each issue was brought up. Videos are savable/shareable.
  • Quick polls will be presented to users throughout the debate, with the results being displayed at the end. Questions may also be submitted that could actually be asked during the debate (submissions open Sep. 25).

UberSpat: Debateable

by David Heyerman on September 11, 2008

  • UberSpat provides a user-friendly platform for people to debate over whichever topic they choose.
  • Users are able to provide evidence to support their sides, while the community rates debates on their level of legitimacy.
  • In turn, the most engaging debates rise to the top of the front page.
  • If UberSpat continue to drive traffic and build a passionate user-base, this site could become somewhat of a Digg for debates; providing a hub for people interested in both sides of the picture.

Is the site’s name appropriate for the service provided?

Net Neutrality Battles Explained

by Jason Wilk on September 1, 2008

  • Net Neutrality deals with setting regulations for broadband providers over their ability to block certain internet applications, content providers (e.g. websites, services, competitors, protocols), and heavy bandwidth users.
  • The possibility of such regulations has been subject to fierce debate.
  • People opposing net neutrality rules say it reduces incentives for telecom companies to improve their offerings and invest shrunken profits into future network technologies.
  • Comcast made a bold move this week to regulate the gateway by punishing heavy downloaders. They are already facing lawsuits over illegal bandwidth throttling and do not support neutrality.
  • Google, an advocate of neutrality, has been a force in the argument, especially this past year when a big decision to launch their mobile business depended on the net neutrality of broadband carriers to not block their apps or OS.

What do you think of the net neutrality?
