- Apple’s mobileme service suffered from numerous setbacks ever since its much-hyped launch alongside the iPhone 3G. To give you an idea of how much Apple screwed up, I signed up for the 60 day mobileme trial close to the launch of the iPhone 3G and Apple’s consolation prize “free trial extensions” pushed my trial period until the beginning of December.
- If you purchased your iPhone 3G around launch time as I did you can expect an email from Apple in the next few days alerting you to the end of the trial period and an upcoming charge to your credit card on file!
- A few reasons why I can live without mobileme:
- I dont use the @me.com email. As much as I woud like push email, it’s not worth filtering my other addresses. I’ll wait for that push update (any day now…)
- iDisk was unreliable and annoying.
- I’ll sync my contacts and calendars with iTunes instead of over-the-air
- A few options that I’m using to replace mobileme functionality
- Foxmarks – Store and sync bookmarks and passwords across multiple Firefox browsers (home, office, etc.)
- Dropbox – 2GB of free storage, works great on pcs and macs, slick web interface (I use it on 3 computers and my iPhone. love it.)
- Take care of your base. My interest in paying for mobileme, a completely underwhelming experience at this point, is none. However, I will say that I own over $10k of Apple hardware between my mac pro, cinema display, iphone and powerbook and it’d be nice to have a working, in-house software solution to keep them connected. It’s dangerous letting users out of the Apple ecosystem…the kool-aid wears off.
- Apple’s failure to execute on a strong cloud connectivity option further solidifies the concerns that they lack the capability to deploy a large-scale software solution.
- Lastly, as a stockholder I’m sure these upcoming mobileme charges to the negligent throngs will do nice things for the balance sheet but could spell trouble in the PR department.

- Microsoft is rumored to be launching a Zune phone at the 3GSM conference in February ‘09.
- Microsoft acquired Danger, the maker of the Sidekick, back in Feb. ‘08 for $500mm. Could Danger and MSFT combine to create an iPhone competitor?
- Maybe. But Microsoft is playing catch-up big time, laying back to survey the playing field while Apple is gobbling market share.
- Will the phone use Windows Mobile? Ehhhh, hopefully not.
- Even if its announced in Feb., the Zune phone most likely won’t ship until months later. By then, Apple will have released the iPhone 3.0 in a holographic form that takes up no space in your pocket, drives your car, and runs Crysis.
- The Zune phone rumor isn’t new. For anyone who remembers, this thing was reported by CrunchGear to be in the works back in Feb. of ‘07 with sweet features like the ability to stream video from Xbox 360s, not to mention a holiday ‘07 release date that “seems to be certain.” Woops.
UPDATE: No Zune Phone Coming

- It has been hard not to notice efforts from Yahoo Search in the news involving upgrades, developer testing sites and contests.
- For the past year, they have launched Search Assist, a tool for helping users refine and expand their search queries; SearchScan, which helps users steer clear of dangerous sites; and SearchMonkey, which allows developers and publishers to customize how their search results are presented enabling users to customize their search experience (this one I love the Yelp integration).
- Yahoo Search has also launched hundreds of littlle improvements like: index expansions and updates, new ranking models, performance tuning, etc.
- Yahoo thinks they are ready to bring the world back to them, and is launching a series of on and off-line advertisemments trying to get people to come back and give their search a try. (starting to sound like LiveSearch)
Honestly, I have switched to Yahoo for the last couple of months and the technology is pretty good. I’m concerned that it is going to have to be a hell of a lot better than Google for average Joe to mass adopt Yahoo again. When is the last time you searched with Yahoo?
