facebook-captcha-status-updates

  • As if Facebook already wasn’t the crowd favorite at the moment due to layout changes. After today, they really won’t be. I went on my Facebook this morning to post one of my usual stories, accompanied by a link. As soon as I did so, a Security Check popped up asking me to input a CAPTCHA code. Talk about the antithesis of copying Twitter, the popular micr0-blogging service wouldn’t dare ask me to verify whether or not I’m trying to spam their ecosystem, let alone my own personal network that I’ve been building for nearly 6 years. Is this what our relationship has come to Facebook? Does this mean that users syndicating their updates from Twitter to Facebook will now be blocked if accompanied bya URL? Our current poll shows users prefer the Old Facebook layout to the New one by 93%. I wonder what it will go to now?

The Future Of Computing

by Jason Wilk on January 30, 2009

  • GDrive is Google’s supposed cloud-based hard drive which offers unlimited space for all of your files. Descriptions of GDrive have appeared in newly updated code on the Google Pack site:

// Localized product category of GDrive
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_CATEGORY = ‘Online file backup and storage‘;
// Localized short description of GDrive (1st
// of 2 description lines)
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_DESCRIPTION_1 = ‘GDrive provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and documents‘;
// Localized short description of GDrive (2nd
// of 2 description lines)
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_DESCRIPTION_2 = ‘GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device – be it from your desktop, web browser or cellular phone‘;

  • Cloud services are getting huge. Being able to access all of your files from anywhere on any computer or phone is becoming a fast reality. The one company besides Google who I think has a chanceto master this technology is Conveneer. My friend Örjan Johansson who founded BlueTooth just launched Conveneer.com, which lives behind the concept that you can access any files directly from a personal server that has a designated URL unique to you. Check it out further to see, but I think that is the future with GDrive.

iPhone 2 Rumors Get Some Hard Evidence

by Jason Wilk on January 29, 2009

  • Rumors of a new iPhone are getting a little warmer today as there looks to be two iPhone 2’s out in the wild. Notice the product key discovered in the new iPhone update denotes 2,1 model. According to MacRumors, “Apple uses these models numbers to distinguish between different hardware models. The original iPhone carries the model number of “iPhone 1,1″ while the 3G iPhone is labeled “iPhone 1,2″. These numbers do not change for simple storage increases and instead represent functionally different devices. Similarly, the iPod Touch was originally introduced as the “iPod 1,1″ and the most recent hardware revision was labeled “iPod2,1″. The 2,1 iPod Touch added a speaker, volume controls, microphone support and a much faster processor than the 1st generation model. This new model number can be found in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in an unencrypted firmware”.
  • The graph below the code represents an ad aserving graph from mobile advertising company PinchMedia. They wouldn’t show anyone the rest of their stats, but they were kind enough to show that they have served ads to 2 unique iPhones running “iPhone2,1″. Is this the nano or is this the next generation of the iPhone set to release @ the next keynote?

HeyZap, The Longtail Competitor To Oberon Media

by Jason Wilk on January 15, 2009

  • If you haven’t heard of Oberon Media, I’m sure you’ve played a casual game or two on one of the many sites that they power. Since their inception, Oberon has become the king of casual games, providing partners like MSN, MySpace, MTV, Walmart.com, NBC and more with their game player.
  • Enter Heyzap, the latest product launch out of the Y Combinator college of startups. Founded by serial entrepreneurs, and my friends, Immad Akhund (recently sold Clickpass) and Jude Gomila, HeyZap is to become the longtail competitor to Oberon by creating an easily embeddable casual games player for use by any website or blog. Webmasters now have the ability to offer their users 4000+ casual games with a simple strip of code.
  • Immad says “Currently, publishers don’t have easy access to highly addictive, online casual games content, but HeyZap intends to change this. Heyzap will shift where users play casual games and bring casual games to a larger audience”. The player aggregates and filters casual games from major game portals, game developers and Mochi Media, recommending users with the most popular games titles in their favorite categories.
  • Some of the benefits to adding HeyZap to a site or blog include increasing user engagement, such as higher on-site time and potentially more page-views.
  • The platform also hopes to help promote new game developers who aren’t getting exposure on the major networks, offering them ad-revenue shares and a home for their games.
  • Casual gaming is now a $2.2bn market, predicted to grow at 25% this year. With the success of Oberon Media, HeyZap stands a real chance in the market for providing game tools for the rest of us. Somebody like DemandMedia, who offers tools for publishers could be setting their eye on this company very soon (Acquisition maybe?) Stay tuned….

  • As Apple builds for the annual MacWorld Expo on Jan.5th, rumors (now confirmed) are circulating that not only will Steve Jobs be a no-show, but there will be no new major product announcement. With only three weeks to go, Jobs is not confirmed as giving his annual keynote, Adobe is scaling back its presence at the show, and Belkin has pulled out all together. As of right now, the MacExpo site mentions nothing of a keynote speech, which has been included in previous schedule announcements prior to the expo. Jobs missing Macworld would be a terrible thing, especially in this market state. Although prior accusations of a heart attack turned out to be false, it is widely known that Steve has been sick with cancer in the past and has been seen in photos skinnier than ever.
  • Moreover, aside from Jobs’ health, David Bailey, an analyst at Goldman Sachs downgraded his rating on Apple (Business Week) He says weaker consumer spending will force Apple to hold back on launching a new product to try and keep demand high for their current offerings. With such uncertainty in the markets, a product launch could be the last thing Apple wants to mess around with, even if it is potentially ground breaking. Speculation of no product announcements is further magnified by the poor efforts of false citizen journalists to come up with potential product rumors like the iPhone Nano as the announcement at MacWorld. There will be no iPhone Nano or Mac Tablet touch-screen computer announcements at this expo.
  • What can we expect? Well, Adobe pulling out means that we certainly won’t be seeing any flash demonstrations on the iPhone. On stage demos sure to take place include a run through of the new app store that will have a better user experience for finding the right app in a sea of now 10,000. The real winner at the show would be to finally get out the real ‘copy and paste’ update along with a mail search function. Talk about a couple crowd pleasers with that will take a strip of code and certainly boost sales. More to come later…

CONFIRMED: Apple today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference & Expo,
