CNN Trying to Buy Breaking Twitter Account For $1M

by Jason Wilk on April 15, 2009

  • A little bird just dropped this to my inbox. I have to assume it’s real until disproved. This guy claims to work for CNN.

If you can’t read that, it says:

Jason,

You may find this interesting. You may know this already, but that CNN/AK thing is causing quite a fluster over here. I work here, and as you may already know, CNN doesn’t even own the Twittewr account involved in the race. Rumors circling over here from the executives saying they are in contact with twitter trying to find the guy’s identity and are prepared to offer $1M dollars for him to hand it over. If you look at our own CNN account, it only has 63K followers, Ashton has already won this thing. Anyways, maybe you want to cover this.

Cheers, J

Hologram Interviewee:
• 35 HD cameras pointed at the subject in a ring (shooting at different angles)
• Cameras are hooked up CNN HQ in NY, synchronizing the angles so perspective is right
• Not just hologram, but infrared
• Correspondents watch a 37inch monitor in front of them to see the interviewer
• Twenty “computers” are crunching this data in order to make it usable

***Unfortunately, the hologram is not projected onto the floor, so its not as exciting as you might think. Wolf Blitzer was talking to a position on the floor.

  • In a controversial switch, Mark Papermaster joins Apple as senior vice president of Devices Hardware Engineering, reporting to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
  • Papermaster, comes to Apple from IBM, and will lead the iPod and iPhone hardware engineering teams.
  • Papermaster has 25 years of product and technology experience, and was previously a vice president at IBM.
  • In other news, Tony Fadell, Apple’s senior vice president of the iPod Division, has announced that he is reducing his role at the company to be just an advisor to Steve Jobs on the side. Sad to see you go Tony.

@MainstreamMedia: Do U Twitter?

by John Jorgensen on September 10, 2008

  • CNN’s Hurricane Gustav coverage resulted in reporter Rick Sanchez’s strong entrance into the Twittersphere.
  • Sanchez, who currently has over 12,000 followers and is following over 5,000, now has his own Twitter-based CNN show called Rick Sanchez Direct.
  • Contrast Sanchez’s numbers with Anderson Cooper, who made it on Twitter first but is following 7 people.
  • Cooper’s using Twitter not as a conversation platform like Sanchez, but merely as another Old Media broadcast medium.
  • Here’s a great list put together by GraphicDesignr.net tracking the use of Twitter by mainstream news organizations.

“Yo CNN…Twitter Me!”

by David Heyerman on September 4, 2008

  • CNN is the first network to truly adopt Twitter as a legitimate service and as well has been regularly voicing this on air.

Are you Twitter fanatics out there scared or welcoming of this big-time network participation?
