Is Apple Secretly Working With Axiotron?

by Jason Wilk on February 3, 2009

  • Above is an image of what the Apple tablet is going to look like. It has been widely rumored that Apple would move to an entirely touch screen notebook experience, and the confirmation of their patent today confirms those claims. What’s even more interesting is that in the last few months, Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder, decided to join the board of a company called Axiotron that makes the award-winning ModBook. You guessed it, the ModBook is a custom MacBook that has been entirely repurposed to become a touch screen tablet. Currently they run at an extremelly high rate of $4,998. Funny enough, the latest edition (and best yet) will be availabe in May/June, right around the same time as the next Mac keynote. Coincidence or is the next Axiotron ModBook going to be coming out of Cupertino? Many think Wozniak joined their board to oversee the operation and technology behind creating a seamless tablet computer. I’d sday it’s more than coincidence and the next keynote will be seeing the debut of the next generation of mobile computing. Here is a clip from the patent claim by Gizmodo.

[0015]As a housing for a computer device, one embodiment of the invention includes: a front shell; a back shell coupled to said front shell to produce said housing, electrical components for the computer device being internal to said housing; and a foam stiffener provided internal to said housing to substantially fill unused space internal to said housing, thereby providing stiffness to said housing.

The Latest In Online Cashback Initiatives: Green

by Jason Wilk on December 5, 2008

svae-the-planet

  • Save The Planet And Win is the latest green social network to launch looking for different ways to encourage people to cut back on their carbon emissions.
  • Beyond the basic online community platform, Save The Planet And Win offers incentives for its users to build up points and redeem them for carbon credits, donate them to a cause, shop or exchange for cash. Beyond earning points, the site offers ‘group’ capabilities so people can form their own coalitions, etc.
  • How the points are eared:  Every week the site will offer a 30 second clip from a sponsor. If a user watches the ad from start to finish, they gain points.
  • Other features include a ‘Carbon Collective’ where groups can monitor their combined carbon reduction efforts, as well as forums for sharing green tips and ideas.
  • Very standard site. It’s always interesting to see new marketing strategies out there, especially  ‘cash-back’ type initiatives like these. TC

  • The Television networks and Hollywood studios, once the ninjas in banning copywritten user-uploaded clips, may be changing their minds.
  • MTV Networks is teaming with MySpace to run advertising on both legally and illegallly uploaded clips from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “Punk’d” and other shows that have been uploaded.
  • Auditude, a Silicon Valley startup, is providing the advertising technology.
  • YouTube launched a similar system last year that identifies video clips and offers copyright holders a choice between removing the material or revenue sharing with YouTube on ads shown across the content page.
  • This is a huge step for Hollywoood.

  • Fitbit, produces a little device (looks like a blue-tooth) that clips onto your clothing and tracks your movement throughout the day and night with its internal motion detecto
  • The device is gathering information about how much exercise you’ve been getting by counting your steps and calculating how many calroeis you have burnt.
  • It even tracks how well you slept by gathering how often you move, and auto syncs wirelessly with your computer to view stats.
  • They have raised $2 million from True Ventures, SoftTech VC and several angels in what appears to be the company’s first round of institutional funding.
  • The device launches early 2009 for $99 each. This is a cool idea, and I imagine buying it at a ‘Brookstone’
