Panasonic To Announce New Technology; Making An EV Move?

by David Heyerman on January 3, 2009

panasonic

  • Apparently Panasonic means business in 2009, already armed with the acquisition of Sanyo under their belt, they’ve just made preliminary announcements to a new technology being released at CES this year.
  • The new tech will allow people to check the charging status of their electric vehicles through home-based appliances.  They do this by sending and receiving data through the already installed electricity cabling within the home or business’s walls.
  • Panasonic has had the technology in development for a while now, unveiling the prototype technology at CES back in 2004.  Even if they plan to release the technology this year at CES, they now have other competitors to deal with; Universal Powerline Association and the HomePlug Powerline Alliance.
  • What’s the good news?  No need for ethernet connectivity to received data…..woohoo.
  • Bad news…..the three competing technologies have no compatibility whatsoever…..weak.
  • Which of the three companies will become the standard, only the future holds.  But considering I’ve never heard of either of the other two, looks like Panasonic’s got atleast a good chance…..that is if the announcement does come true.

Sling Launches Its Hulu Competitor, But On A Leash

by Jason Wilk on November 25, 2008

slingbox

  • Sling Media, the company behind the popular Slingbox TV-streaming hardware devices, has finally launched its widely anticipated streaming video portal much like Hulu on Sling.com
  • Sling offers content from most of the major networks and studios including Warner, Sony, and MGM.
  • Arrested Development in on board, but unfortunately The Daily Show and Colbert Report aren’t available such as on Hulu.
  • Sling’s leg up in the space is due to it’s DVR hardware device that let’s you stream any content saved to the box on any computer or your TV. This isn’t much of a plus for those with HDMI cable’s and right now streaming is only available for Window’s users that have downloaded the plug-in.
  • More importantly, Hulu has Sling by the balls, because most of the content on Sling is being licensed from Hulu (better yet, NBC/Universal). This will certainly hold them back from being a head-to-head competitor as most are trying to hype it to be.
  • It’s going to be pretty tough to knock Hulu off it’s high horse right now, especially for players like FanCast (what happened there Comcast?)

old-phone

  • Author/blogger Tom Evslin has predicted that all copper landlines will cease to exist by 2013.
  • In the last year, copper access lines dropped around 10%.
  • Revenue from “home phone” lines is evaporating. Copper lines are seeing increased use from DSL, but that growth is being outpaced by cable-based broadband.
  • Problems will arise as landlines die out due to old telephone lines still having to be serviced even when only a few customers remain.
  • In order to prepare for the death of the landline, Evslin says we need to make sure everyone in the country has access to cheap mobile phone and broadband service.
  • This isn’t hard to believe; I don’t know a single person under 50 that uses a landline outside of their office.

  • Tingz Is A New Kind Of Widget Provider That Let’s You Deploy Redundant Widgets Across Multiple Platforms and Devices.
  • Take content from Tingz such as a recipe you have found, a schedule change you have made, and sync this information with any other device or share with friends.
  • Tingz scale to the size of whichever display you are using them on, whether it is TV, iPhone, Computer, etc
  • Navigate the widgets with a multitude of navigation controls such as a TV remote, touch screen, mouse, and keyboard.
  • Mark Cuban led the panel in a unanimous decision that this concept is attempting to attack too saturated a market. Cable providers are already beginning to integrate their own apps, the iPhone obviously has plenty and the computer is a tough place to have a stand alone business of providing widgets

Do you agree with Cuban that Tingz doesn’t stand a chance?
