Dark Knight Blu-Ray First With BD-Live Features

by John Jorgensen on December 10, 2008

blu-ray-logo-400

  • The Dark Knight Blu-ray release is the first Blu-ray disc that supports special online features, otherwise known as BD-Live.
  • Blu-ray 2.0 player required. Hint: PS3 would be a good choice.
  • Launch the BD-Live feature on the disc and you’re prompted to create an account with Warner Brothers. The first part of the registration takes place on the disc, with the second portion requiring you to click a link that WB sends to your email.
  • The actual BD-Live features are available online via your computer. The main feature? User recorded commentary.
  • Warner Brothers allows you to stream the movie via the ‘net while recording your own video/audio commentary as it plays via webcam/mic. You can browse through the library of everyone else’s recorded commentary (kind of cool and random yet mainly pointless), in addition to a “Featured Commentary” list of hand-picked recordings by Warner Brothers. On the list: Paul Levitz, creator of DC Comics, and Jerry Robinson, the alleged creator of the Joker.
  • Other BD-Live features include some extra videos talking about the film’s soundtrack and a few animated comics. Nothing that couldn’t be found on a normal DVD. Oh, and you can send an ‘e-vite’ inviting your friends to watch the film “with” you on their own separate computers. Sweeeet.
  • User-recorded commentary is the only real offering here. Cool? Yeah. A little underwhelming? Yep. The only tracks anyone wants to hear are those by the pros. Put em on the DVD.

  • First Target made this year’s gift cards into digital cameras, and now Best Buy has released theirs integrated with a 3.5mm jack to plug into any audio player.
  • Giftcard makers trying to increase the value of the gift card for the consumer, or are they just trying to make them cool enough so you want to keep them instead of spend them?
  • Last year Best Buy made $43M in unused gift cards. Hmmmmm

Woices Brings Geo-tagging to Audio

by Jason Wilk on October 13, 2008

  • Woices allows people to record audio and geo-tag it for a specific location, with all the clips able to be viewed and played off of the world map that lives on the site.
  • Only a few dozen audio files currently uploaded, and most of the names are in Spanish.
  • Similar to Placethings, an upcoming service that uses GPS-enabled mobiles to geo-tag pictures and sound clips, alerting you when you’re in a location where someone has previously recorded media.

Neither service will catch on unless they reach critical mass. I see a Woices-like app having a better shot than Placethings, which is less useful and more gimmicky.

  • A new NHL.com made its debut today with fantastic new features for hockey fans, whoever they are.
  • Features include:
    • Free video highlights, stats, and audio feeds.
    • GameCenter Live with simultaneous viewing of up to four camera angles or four different games.
    • NHL + Yahoo Fantasy Sports co-branded premium fantasy game.
    • Single Sign On (SSO) to access every content area in the site.
  • Whether these online offerings help the NHL bounce back remains to be seen but the internet community is certainly grateful for their hard work.

Are you interested more in the NHL or in their technology developments?

A tiny original.

OutShouts Personalizes Shared Video

by John Jorgensen on September 15, 2008

  • OutShouts lets you send a video to anyone accompanied by a personally recorded video/audio message.
  • Downside: only videos from their library are available to be sent, so you can’t find your own YouTube vid and send it with an OutShouts message.
  • OutShouts can be sent via email or posted to a variety of major social networks and blog platforms.
  • ‘Favorites’ list lets you keep bookmark your favorite videos on the service.
