Motorola Helping Consumers Ditch Landlines

by Jason Wilk on January 6, 2009

  • One of Motorola’s releases this week at CES will help consumers finally ditch the landline in their home. It’s a new digital photo frame that combines a CDMA femtocell with a software-based phone. How does it work? The femtocell will connect with your existing broadband connection, boosting cell phone coverage in your home. It will be especially helpful for current and next generation connection speeds such as 3G and 4G Wi-max. If you are tired of only receiving Edge or no connection throughout your house or areas in your office, this is the perfect solution to guarantee you will receive the service you are paying for.
  • This year will be about having another device in your home. Whether it is this product, or it’s a femtocell embedded in the screen of your refrigerator, a new form of connectivity will be arriving. Some may see this as the Carriers penetrating your household, which in some sense is true, but at least these devices will have multiple functions such as photo’s, RSS readers, weather reports, etc. As Om Malik points out, Rob Malnati, a senior manager at Motorola, said these devices will likely be offered through the carriers as part of the current subsidized model for consumer premise equipment. It will be available for trials in the first part of this year. At least it will be better than another blinking black box with wires coming out of it. Yuck.

  • Best Buy will begin selling a discounted iPhone 3G starting today (December 19) through Saturday January 3. The 8GB will cost $189.99 and the 16GB version $289.99. Although only $10 off, this gives BestBuy the lowest price in the world for the iPhone.
  • On top of the $10 discount, Best Buy is offering a $10 gift-certificate for people who buy the 8GB model and $15 for the 16GB (not to be used for the phone purchase). Thanks BGR.

apple-mobile-expiring-fail

  • Apple’s mobileme service suffered from numerous setbacks ever since its much-hyped launch alongside the iPhone 3G.   To give you an idea of how much Apple screwed up, I signed up for the 60 day mobileme trial close to the launch of the iPhone 3G and Apple’s consolation prize “free trial extensions” pushed my trial period until the beginning of December.
  • If you purchased your iPhone 3G around launch time as I did you can expect an email from Apple in the next few days alerting you to the end of the trial period and an upcoming charge to your credit card on file!
  • A few reasons why I can live without mobileme:
    • I dont use the @me.com email. As much as I woud like push email, it’s not worth filtering my other addresses. I’ll wait for that push update (any day now…)
    • iDisk was unreliable and annoying.
    • I’ll sync my contacts and calendars with iTunes instead of over-the-air
  • A few options that I’m using to replace mobileme functionality
    • Foxmarks – Store and sync bookmarks and passwords across multiple Firefox browsers (home, office, etc.)
    • Dropbox – 2GB of free storage, works great on pcs and macs, slick web interface (I use it on 3 computers and my iPhone. love it.)
  • Take care of your base. My interest in paying for mobileme, a completely underwhelming experience at this point, is none.  However, I will say that I own over $10k of Apple hardware between my mac pro, cinema display, iphone and powerbook and it’d be nice to have a working, in-house software solution to keep them connected.  It’s dangerous letting users out of the Apple ecosystem…the kool-aid wears off.
  • Apple’s failure to execute on a strong cloud connectivity option further solidifies the concerns that they lack the capability to deploy a large-scale software solution.
  • Lastly, as a stockholder I’m sure these upcoming mobileme charges to the negligent throngs will do nice things for the balance sheet but could spell trouble in the PR department.

iPhone Ad Gets Shut Down For Being Misleading

by Jason Wilk on November 26, 2008

  • iPhone users in the UK are up in arms over the iPhone 3G commercials that claim it is “really fast”, showing the phone load internet pages in under a second.
  • As we all know here, the 3G has not lived up to its name, but no one has taken it to the streets. In the UK, The Advertising Standards Authority says that in a test, the 3G iPhone commercial is misleading and that the 3G is not absolutely faster than the 2G predecessor
  • After respecting viewers’ complaints, the ASA said the ad must never appear again in the same misleading fashion.
  • Apple is saying the ASA should let it slide since within the commercial is an asterik which says ‘Network performance varies by location’. This time you’re wrong Apple. Speed that phone up along with your stock price.
