And So The Solar Space Race Begins..

by David Heyerman on September 2, 2009

  • Now that we’ve began to cover our land in solar panels, the next step has begun;  launching solar power stations into orbit.
  • Mitsubishi Electric and IHI Corp have joined twelve other companies to develop a 1GW space solar station.
  • Within the next four years, the companies plan on spending $21 billion (2 trillion yen) on the technology that will beam the electricity back to earth.  They hope the station will be in orbit and generating electricity within the next 30 years.
  • Why is this huge?  Unlike stationary solar plants which turn off when the sun goes down, this station will be able to generate electricity from the sun 24 hrs a day.
