New Chevy Volt Gets 230 MPG In The City

  • General Motors Corp. today said its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car should get 230 mpg in city driving, more than four times the current champion, the Toyota Prius.
  • The Volt is powered by an electric motor and a battery pack with a 40-mile range. After that, a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity for a total range of 300 miles. The battery pack can be recharged from a standard home outlet. If a person drives the Volt less than 40 miles, in theory they could go without using gasoline. “We are confident the highway (mileage) will be a triple-digit composite,” GM CEO Fritz Henderson said.
  • Do I dare ask why it’s taken this long for GM to produce a care that has mileae similar to the old EV?

Personally, I doubt the hype about this being a "game changer." What's the game and how are we changing it? We already have the Prius, which is far more cost-effective. Is it just a game changer for GM? Then why should we care? They're just playing catch up. If you don't think the Prius is efficient enough, what about the Nissan Leaf, which looks to come out right around the same time as the Volt.

My money is on the hype dying off and the Volt joining the Tesla in relative obscurity.

From CNBC, "They don’t expect that people are going to flock out to showrooms and buy these vehicles, there’s limited production right off the bat, b/c of the battery issues they have, in terms of developing those, it’ll be many, many years before we see GM return money, or make money on the Volt, that was the criticism of the task force.” (quoted from http://www.newsy.com/videos/all_charged_up_over...)
  • After the bankruptcy GM had to come out with a game changer.
