Firm Claims $1.2 Trillion To Be Saved In Efficiency Efforts

by David Heyerman on August 4, 2009

  • efficiencyMcKinsey & Co.  just released a report showing what the US could save if we fully committed ourselves to energy efficiency.  As you can see by the title, it’s a lot of dough.
  • The effort would include huge investments in retrofitting buildings and weatherizing homes, while government initiatives would have to be up to pace as well.  McKinsey claims the investment would cost nearly $520 billion.
  • Of course, the net savings is more like $700 billion when you factor in the costs of making something like this happen.  Nonetheless, saving $700 billion isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
  • McKinsey also concluded that with the effort, the US could not only prevent 1.1 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions per year but could also shave 23% of its total energy demand by 2020.
