Apple Store Bans Facebook For Life

by Jason Wilk on February 5, 2009

  • In an effort to thwart off time-theft and loiterers, Apple has decided to add Facebook to the list of banned websites at retail locations nationwide. When I asked some of the genius’ today whether or not anyone noticed the change, they all said that Facebook stopped working sometime in the past week. One of the genius’ said  “Apple Stores have become a regular Internet Cafe, so placing the most popular time-killer [Facebook] of them all on the banned-list will certainly help everyone get a chance to test out the computers”.

  • As you may have heard, MySpace was banned in May of 2007 from all Apple Stores. When asked why, Apple said “Nearly 2 million people visit Apple Stores every week. We want to provide everyone a chance to test-drive a Mac, so we are no longer offering access to MySpace in our stores.” Apple Stores, which now total 251 worldwide, see an average of 15,744 visitors weekly per store (Q4, 2008). So, currently about 16 million people per month are now denied the right to jump on for a minute (or an hour) to update their status or do their daily stalking. It will be interesting if Facebook will see a slight dip in traffic this month due to the change.

  • Works for me! When I'm shopping for computer gear for my business I hate having to wait for some kid to get finished updating their status to "at the Apple store".

Apple wants to make sure that many people can try the platform, so it's only logical that they'll try to keep out the people that use it as a free internet café. Big deal. Why would this be news? Because it's Facebook? I'm sure there's a ton of sites on the blocked list, most of which we'll never hear about.

Somehow I don't think that Facebook will be affected too much. Those people that cannot check their accounts in Apple stores will find other places to do so. The traffic will be the same. Apple might lose some customers though.

  • This is a interesting thing, hehe
  • This makes total sense. I love how people want to jump on Apple if they do anythign that is even remotely "uncool". It's a business and they are selling computers...not just their brand. Get over it.

Besides, who really cares? I don't get pissed at the grocery store because they won't let me open up a box of cookies and sample it before I buy it. Meh...I'm boring myself already. This is a non-story.

Walked inside a few apple stores in the Los Angeles area. Access to facebook was available. This is not true for all stores, perhaps only some?

The plural of genius is geniuses, not genius'.
  • Personally, I can understand the logic behind it: The possibility to surf in a store is just to demo the possibilities of a PC, not to harbour 3000 Internet Addicts...

Apple is a bunch of Nazi's regardless of the content of this article

Hey, it's their store - their rules. I think it's great! If someone wants to tell you that they just put the dog out to piss and it's deemed THAT important, let them call you.
  • I should ban Facebook from my house too. My girlfriend comes over to log in again. Is like a compulsive disorder.
  • francois
my Facebook app still works on my Itouch. haha
    guess im lucky
  • My research documents reports of the Koobface worm infecting (or attempting to infect) workplace-related computers by way of Facebook. Employers thus have security as a reason to block social network sites. http://computersafety.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/... --Ben
  • BRILLIANT NEWS! I hate Failbook and when I visit the Apple store in London I can't browse the store without seeing people on their Facebook profiles wasting time.
Good job for banning Facebook, the privacy rapist.

I am not entirely convinced the author was complaining.

Good move Apple! And your stock is up $3.26 today too. Social networking leeches - go crawl back into the hole you came out of.

So how are the Apple employees going to teach how to use the Facebook feature in iPhoto? "so hit the button and take my word it is up there, you will have to wait until you get home to see how it worked."

What's next Google maps or Flicker?

I went to the Apple Store in Thousand Oaks, CA today and they said Facebook is not allowed in there anymore. It may be a case by case thing.

This is fantastic. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to test drive a new Mac, but can't because there are people sitting around on the Macs for, no joke, HOURS emailing, facebooking, watching TV shows on Hulu, and (even thought it's supposedly banned) I still see people looking at pics of people on MySpace and making dirty comments.

In each of the New York City AppleStores, there's a little section where all the degenerates seem to hang out and do this. They tend to be gross, dirty-looking people who very likely do not have computers of their own. I've stood next to this area before and heard one of these characters watching some kind of soft-core porn. One of the Apple sales people was trying to demo a Mac next to this guy, and said nothing to him, even though the three of them kept looking over at the wildly dirty sounds coming from this video.

One time I waited 15 minutes for a woman to finish using the (then brand new) MacBook Air to finish writing a newsletter to her yoga club. After 15 minutes, asked if she could email her yoga club from her own computer, or someplace other than an AppleStore where people are actually trying to test drive the machines to PURCHASE them instead of leach the free Internet access. She was displeased, but told me she would wrap up soon. The nerve.

Facebook and MySpace are just the first steps. More needs to be done. I've seen AppleStore employees ASK permission to use a computer "for just a quick moment to show a customer something," from one of these characters who camp out in the AppleStores to access the internet for free. Yikes! When I was working with an employee to renew my MobileMe account, he had to negotiate with some guy (who was just using the computer for some photo project he was working on) to let us use that computer.

Twice I've had someone who looks homeless ask me to guard their computer while they went to get a drink and some food, and then a separate time so they could go to the bathroom. I've seen these kinds of people ask other to do this too.

This happens most frequently at the Soho and 14th Street AppleStores. Not as much at 5th Ave.

First off @Backtoreality, you spelled ridiculous wrong. I, personally am happy about this. Too many teenagers sitting there wasting customer's time. The apple store is not a coffee shop!
  • John
The writer of this article who claims that Apple is denying users their "right" to go on Facebook must use a tiny comb for hair on his tiny head that holds his tiny brain.
  • John
They can always go to the public library, still free last time I checked and If there is no line they usually don't enforce the one hour limit many have.

    "the right".

Rediculous. You have the right to brrowse nothing unless it's ok your own computer at your own home ok Internet service that you pay for. Since when do snivling whiners have the right to do anything on a computer they don't own. This article is pure drivel.

Has it really been kept under the radar, or was it considered "not significant enough" to put it on the front pages everywhere? I'm opting for the latter.

Apple wants to make sure that many people can try the platform, so it's only logical that they'll try to keep out the people that use it as a free internet café. Big deal. Why would this be news? Because it's Facebook? I'm sure there's a ton of sites on the blocked list, most of which we'll never hear about.
