  • Sarah Palin just announced a very ambitious goal of having half of the energy produced by Alaska to come from renewable sources by 2025.  That’s nice a jump from her trademarked “Drill Baby, Drill” chant, isn’t it?
  • This is, however, a great effort considering Alaska has some of the best renewable resources available, specifically in geothermal, wind, tidal, and wave energy.  Not to mention, this is the most ambitious renewable energy goal to date; Oregon projecting 25% by 2025, Washington at 15% by 2020, and Obama pledging 25% for the US by 2025.
  • What’s the catch? The plan itself doesn’t explain any sort of action by the Alaska government.  Instead, it’s just a 250 page document titled “Alaska Energy: A first step toward energy independence.”  The document itself is actually just a list of resources that locals can use to start their own efforts.
  • On a more positive note, a $100 million fund has been established for renewable energy projects, and according to the ADN, 77 startups have already been picked to receive chunks of the funding.
