Google Targets Your Mobile Phone, Upgrades AdWords

  • Today, Google announced a new advertising campaign option for AdWords customers to target iPhone, T-Mobile G1, and other mobile devices with full (HTML) Internet browsers. Although current advertisers using AdWords have seen their ads displayed on webpages, that is only because Google has re-formatted standard web pages and results to display correctly on the phone. This is Google’s latest platform offering since it launched AdWords for casual games.
  • Recently, Google launched a search results page specifically for the iPhone and G1 (without ads). Now, advertisers will be able to target just mobile users or add a ‘mobile’ option their current campaigns with AdWords. This is good news for both advertisers and customers who are searching the web. Advertisers will now be able to more effectively target people searching on their phones, and in turn customers won’t be bothered with ads that are useless to them unless they are at home on a laptop or a desktop. This is Google’s first step in trying to get you on the go and the complexity and localization of this concept will only be multiplied in the coming years.
  • Want to give it a try? Go to your AdWords account and head to the “Device Platform” option under “Networks and Bidding”. Select “iPhones and other mobile devices with full internet browsers.”
