Microsoft Offers Windows for Download in New Online Store
by John Jorgensen on November 14, 2008

- Microsoft has launched an online store selling Microsoft software (no games) and hardware.
- Supports Electronic Software Distribution (ESD), allowing you to pay for Windows and download the OS right from the site.
- No need to keep track of those Windows discs anymore; if you purchase from the online store you can download the OS repeatedly.
- Its about time. ESD has been around for awhile. The ESD model was the basis of Steam, the online distribution platform launched by Valve, the creators of the popular PC game Half Life, back in 2002. It was used to launch the game’s sequel in 2004.
- How long until we can announce the death of the CD for good?
