When Apps Get Cracked, iPhone Developers Fight Back

by glu on October 29, 2008

While I was searching online to find reviews on our app, I stumbled upon several sites that contained a cracked/ripped version of our application including many other popular hits.

  • Eric took action against three sites with varying success.
  1. On the first site the file was being hosted on rapidshare.   After contacting their Abuse Team support,, the crack-site was shut down and Rapidshare provided communications back to bric entertainment regarding the confirmation.  Great turn around time and they did their job to maintain credibility.
  2. It appears that this site provides tips on how to crack iphone apps, in addition to, downloads for apps that they cracked.  Despite the website’s message that the site’s purpose is to backup and test apps, this is obviously not the case.  What’s even more disconcerting is the fact that the site actually uses the Apple logo on its menu bar.  This is not only absurd but the activity on the site violates Apple’s TOS in addition to copyrights.
In addition, here is the site’s post on how to crack iPhone apps
  3. After seeing this,we contacted Blogspot and hopefully they will be able to resolve the issue swiftly.

We are committed to work with Apple to resolve the issue ASAP to not only benefit us, but to also other developers who have worked hard on their applications.

Any other success stories out there?

Indeed. You'd be better off spending your time writing code.

Nobody who is willing to jailbreak their phone and download "cracked" applications from outside the store is likely to have bought your application to begin with.
  • Good luck Apple/Eric. Warez and cracked apps have been around forever -- what makes you think you'll be able to stop it on the iPhone?

Update - it looks like http://ipavault.com has been taken down. Go Apple!
