Microsoft Growth Slowing. Maybe Bill Gates’ New Startup BGC3 Will Help

by Jason Wilk on October 23, 2008

  • Microsoft announced earnings today for the third quarter.
  • Quarterly revenue rose 9% over last year to a record $15 billion
  • Net profits rose 1.9 percent to $4.37 billion, majority coming from Windows client, server, XBox and Office businesses.
  • Online revenues including MSN, search and advertising networks, rose 15 percent to $770 million.
  • Online profits however showed an operating loss of $480 million. Compare that with the $267 million loss in this arm last year.
  • With all due respect, Microsoft is spending heavily on breaking into the search and advertising market, which they can afford to do and post losses. This isn’t a shocker for them. They want to spend this much and it is what they need to do if they want to have a presence online in 10 years.
  • Bill Gates is on the verge of starting a new stealth project which is gaining buzz around the world. The company, BGC3 is the first company Bill Gates would have gone out on his own to do since Microsoft. Speculation is that it is merely a holding company for paying employees, but you never know. Good luck Bill.
