Woices Brings Geo-tagging to Audio

by Jason Wilk on October 13, 2008

  • Woices allows people to record audio and geo-tag it for a specific location, with all the clips able to be viewed and played off of the world map that lives on the site.
  • Only a few dozen audio files currently uploaded, and most of the names are in Spanish.
  • Similar to Placethings, an upcoming service that uses GPS-enabled mobiles to geo-tag pictures and sound clips, alerting you when you’re in a location where someone has previously recorded media.

Neither service will catch on unless they reach critical mass. I see a Woices-like app having a better shot than Placethings, which is less useful and more gimmicky.

  • I'm one of the developers for Placethings. We're going to have a feature-rich website (with fullscreen maps) to view and manage content published from the mobile applications. The site will contain pages for every user, a public timeline, and popular/featured content. Users will be able to login (using Twitter, Facebook Connect, or Placethings), manage their content (video, images, audio, and text), add friends, and explore using the website or a mobile app.

We've also got a whole bunch of ideas for more specialized types of content, but we haven't decided on which ones to focus on. Recently we've been tossing around ideas for augmented reality games with our colleagues of the EMAC program at UTD.

We've built the system to be open, so developers will be able to use our API to build their own apps.
