America To Possibly Get Free Wi-Fi Says The FCC

by Jason Wilk on October 13, 2008

  • A proposal to create a free, national wi-fi service got a boost today when Federal Communications Commission engineers put to rest T-Mobile’s early accusations that the free spectrum would disrupt 3G cell networks. (nice try)
  • This would be a huge step forward for getting the rest of America online as well as enabling technologies like VoIP to really have the impact it deserves.
  • Ultimately, I don’t think it will happen because the carriers/ISP’s will claim it could lead to a loss of revenues and jobs. It will be a sticky battle from here on out, pushing the potential offering back for years and years.
  • We can only hope this will scare carriers and ISP’s into shrinking their prices on data plans, wi-fi cards, home internet, etc. and improving their service (cough cough…..Comcast)

What do you think will happen?
