PopTent Rips Off CurrentTV’s Viewer Ads Model And Launches Stand Alone Business

by Jason Wilk on October 8, 2008

  •  PopTent enables advertisers and brands to post requests for an ad to be produced for around $25,000
  • The site’s members, which consists of small studios and videographers can create the ad and submit it.
  • If the brand or advertiser likes the ad, they can purchase it for around $6K.
  • CurrentTV does this exact same thing. They let advertisers post a project on the Current web site, where users can take a crack at getting their submission picked up. If your spot airs on Current, they pay you$2,500. If sponsors air it elsewhere, you can earn up to $60,000
How many advertisers are willing to pay 25K to have a crowd-sourced ad submitted to them?

I agree Alan. I don't think Current was trying to own this space in the first place. It just fit well into their business of user created television. Do I think it can become a standalone business and get away with charging those astronomical rates? Unless some alllstars come out of there and it catches fire, no. I like the eLance for videographers though.
  • I think it's a decent model and there's room for more than one company to play. This is sort of like elance for videographers.
