MySpace Music Hits 1 Billion Streams, But Are The Advertisers Covering The Cost?

by Jason Wilk on October 5, 2008

  • MySpace Music hit their first major milestone in the first week of launching, hitting 1 billion song streams.
  • The big 4 music labels supplying MySpace with the music are making money per stream.
  • The songs are all ad supported, but whether or not MySpace is able to make a profit from advertisers over the label payouts is in question.
  • It has been said that MySpace could be in anti-trust trouble if the labels are giving them preferential stream rates compared to places like Last.fm, Pandora and more.
  • At this rate of downloads, advertisers will be paying some of the largest display rates online.

Are the labels breaking the rules for MySpace to help jump start the streaming business in their favor?

I don't think the advertisers can support this thing. What's in it for them? It's not like every time I listen to a song I think about buying a Toyota. Or do I?
