House Passes Save-Pandora Bill, Senate to Vote on Monday
by John Jorgensen on September 28, 2008

- The Webcaster Settlement Act (H.R. 7084), a bill that would reduce royalty fees for streaming internet radio, was passed by the House on Saturday.
- Act would allow the Digital Media Association, a national trade organization for online audio/video industries, to freely negotiate with SoundExchange, who collects royalties for the music industry.
- Pandora urged its listeners to call their congressmen in the days leading up to the vote on the bill, also supported by lobbying from National Public Radio.
- Next step: passing the Senate. Voting will take place Monday.
- Last year, the Copyright Royalty Board doubled the fee for playing a song over internet radio — costing Pandora $17m of their $25m projected revenue.
- Pandora previously said they would have to shut down by 2010 under the current fee model. This bill would give them new life.
