HTC “G1″ Dream Unveiled

by John Jorgensen on September 23, 2008

  • T-Mobile has unveiled the G1 handset today — produced by HTC and named “Dream,” it’s the first phone to use Android, Google’s mobile OS.
  • Available in October for $179, $35/mo unlimited data/SMS plan. Comes with only 1GB memory (base $199 iPhone has 8GB).
  • Touch screen + physical keyboard.
  • Requires a Google account to use the phone; tightly tied to Google apps such as calendar, maps and mail (Gmail comes free w/no data plan required, while Microsoft Exchange is not supported).
  • “Android Market” is Google’s answer to Apple’s app store, and Amazon’s MP3 store lets DRM-free songs be purchased right from the phone.
  • Web-browser referred to by Google as “Chrome Light,” similar to iPhone’s Safari functionality + an application taskbar to quickly switch inbetween apps.
