Google Going Gamer?

by Jason Wilk on September 17, 2008

  • The national enquirer reports this morning that Google is close to buying video game publisher Valve
  • Valve is behind massively popular games like Half-life and Counterstrike
  • Google wants them for their distribution platform called Steam, an online gaming platform that provides the ability to distribute games and other content directly to more than 15 million gamers around the world.
  • Steam opens up new channels of direct distribution, which increases profit margins to content creators.
  • Google wants Valve to compete in the Apple, Sony and Nintendo mobile game wars that I wrote about yesterday here.
  • Apple’s only superior feature to Sony and Nintendo in the mobile gaming market is their distribution platform. Their touch screen is second rate compared to the Ninentdo DS or PSP
  • Google Android will have a similar distribution platform as Apple, but software that can be deployed to many different hardware types, now even a gaming console.

Is gaming a good get for Google?

I thin you're spot on with this assumption. Apple will never fully be able to comete in the mobile gaming market with just a touch screen. They are limited. Google could potentially partner with a great hardware company to build a next generation gaming device and have the distribution channel to do it. Cool article.
