Poll: Which Facebook Layout Do You Prefer?

by John Jorgensen on September 7, 2008

new-old-facebook

  • Since, our first post 9 days ago, we’ve found there to be an immense amount of passion behind the anti-new-facebook movement.
  • The poll we started has grown exponentially, from 0 to 34,000 votes in that time.
  • As you can see, some 93% of those people voting have agreed the original Facebook is superior.
  • Let’s show Facebook how serious we are about this and get the poll to 100,000.

I just joined Facebook, so do not know what the Old version is - however, I am not impressed with Facebook the way it is now, but having nothing to compare it to, so cannot really sign a petition. It is very 'flat' and salesy. It is 'Our' Facebook - we should be able to (to a point) configure our page as we see fit - minus the ads.

i like the old version of facebook, not the new version
  • Rhonda
The new layout isn't as easy to find things. I don't like that is show's you what others write on mutual friends walls... which I see you can turn off. But, I miss having it show you when people changed profile pictures. I seem to always miss when people uplaod new photo's now where before I never missed them. I also I find the new facebook glitches more and takes often forever to load profiles or to refresh your home page.

I think most people liked the old layout much better. And for people newer to computers was much easier to move about the site.

Easy answer to old/new facebook problem. Create a new one that someone in their eighties could use. Both are too complicated and can be misleading. That's right, I said a new one. I don't have time to figure all this stuff out - facebook should be easier - Start Over!!!!
  • Daniel Forest
the original facebook was superior that is
  • Ludek Rosendorf
Agreed, the original facebook was superior, with much nicer feel, more usable.
Every subsequent change only made it more and more 'ordinary'!!
  • Mary Kamm
I did not get on Facebook until Dec 08 so don't know what changes were made before that time. However, I see they are still making changes which I am not at all pleased with and wishing there were some way I could get out of this website.
  • Steve
Please bring back the old format
  • I am on facebook less and less due to the new format
  • Jennifer
I find I am on facebook less and less due to the new format

i have so many problems on the new facebook i dont like it a bit
  • Kevin
Change it back to the old Facebook. You guys are not Apple.
  • Shook Rosenthal
I think the quickest and most efficient way to get facebook to change back to the original layout is to go on a hunger strike. Before you shun the idea so quickly just think about it.

    1. If just a few people die facebook might personally feel responsible and change it sooner than later.

    2. The economy is bad, and I am out of work. If i can save some money and not eat for a cause its like hitting 2 birds with 1 stone.

    3. We are Americans and most of us our overweight like myself. Well hey this will let me shed some pounds.

    4. Lastly, because we are passionate enough to change the layout of facebook at any measure and any cost.

New facebook took away the option to control wich post i wanna see on my profile and wich not. They use this Livefeed wich is spamming the profile with every move that friends did. If i'm not interested in a post i have to block all posts from the specific person.
what they did is a mass spammer.
  • yvonne hiscock
if it ain't broke don't fix it. this new facebook is too much like twitter which is pants.
  • michael
thank god sombody made this.i hate this new facebook!the original one was the best!it wasnt as confusing!

why change what was great,,into beta which is not great

    Dear Facebook,

I have no problem with the old Newsfeed...I actually like it. But this new facebook layout s ridiculous. It annoyingly looks a lot like Twtter, and whenever you want to write something simple on your friends' walls, it shows up really huge in the newsfeed for everyone to see and read. I understand that in the previous layout it showed as well, but first of all, it was much smaller and much less noticeable, and second of all, it was in gray so it was basically almost like a private conversation. If we were to use messaging to make t private, then what's the point? It would be just like email.

Also, it really disgusts me the way wall posts are written. One name>the other person's name. This is like the millionth time you guys made big changes without giving the users an option. I think it's about time you realize that we have voices and opinions and WE are the ones who use your site! Please take our opinions into deep consideration BEFORE you make huge changes. So far, I haven't had a single friend on my friend list who expressed that they liked the new changes, and if you notice, the petition group against the new changes has almost 2,000,000 members!!!!

The only thing I can really do about this though, since you guys are not giving us choices, is ask, that you please listen to the people. maybe the newsfeed was a good addition to facebook, but the new layout is NOT and it just hurts my brain to think about it and look at it. Facebook is like my favorite website to go on, as it is for millions all over the world, so please don't ruin it for us. Thank you for listening.
  • Barnabas
Would also like to see FB work more smoothly on the iPhone. Too many buttons that do not work with the touch screen, plus the App bar gets in the way (vertically as well as horizontally) and cannot be removed. Needs a more simple approach to the small format.
  • Hannah
    Perfectly stated!!
  • matt phillips
i prefer the old facebook layout over this new one. i liked the way the profile and homepage looked before
  • jacqueline
i dont like the new layout because they changed the pages you make into the profiles but thats why i made pages so i could have something different to my profile
  • Fjodor
I just wish everything was spread out like it originally was, there was a specific area for everything, nothing all mashed together. Now you really have to read carefully figure out what you're looking at.
  • Alyssa
As somebody who does not use facebook that often, and does not have time to learn all the new changes, I am strongly against "New Facebook." It is confusing, and unnecessary. And I want the birthday feature back!
  • Monique
Myself and others enjoy having seeing the old face book, we are asking to please leave it as is.
  • Marcel L-V
Why change something that is not wrong? What a waste of time and effort!!

THIS NEW FACEBOOK SUCKS!!!! WE WANT THE OLD ONE BACK, CAN'T YOU PEOPLE SEE THAT?!GIVE US OPTIONS!!! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO LOOK FOR MY PICTURES ANYMORE!!! :| :(

    Mark Zuckerberg,

Who keeps facebook running? WE DO! Who hates the New Facebook Layout, I do and MANY MORE! This SHOULD ABSOLUTELY be optional. I hate the new layout. If you do not change this I may deactivate my account and I might NEVER join back. So think twice!

The old facebook is full of crap. EVERYTHING IS SO SLOW. I stopped using computers with windows because its horrible. It freezes my system and it doesn't work. Applications take long to load.
  • Donald
I totally agree with Meg. There is way too much clutter on the pages. The important personal, photos, friends, interests need to be all on one page, uncluttered with popup missleading waste-of-time games that turn into "wanna buy" ads. I don't mind a legitimate posted advert. The games need to be on a separate page tab. The groups and community interest on another page tab. There are so many bits and pieces that once clicked on take you away from where you wanna be. I am considering closing my site in favour of keeping just my old Classmates site and another simpler communication site I am dabbling with. Facebook does not have to be an 'everything site'. We do have the internet search tabs for other fun information that we really might be interested in you know.

The Old Facebook is the Better Than New Facebook
  • Jayde Kymbaliee
Okay.. That last post was jusy being moderate..
I hate the NEW facebook partly because you can't see my wall, my profile, the thing you write in to tell people about yourself ISN'T long enough/Big enough &+ It act's ghay all the time as it DELETES things without me knowing!!
It's stupid and WAY harder to use. I WANT the old facebook as it was greater and easier to use!
I would go back to myspace but all my friends happen to be on facebook and the only way i get to keep in touch!
    Ghayy.. I know.
Think we should all find another easier site which we can all use and ditch facebook if it doesn't change back.

    Love Jayde xx

The new Facebook is so hyped and it is just crap. Sorry but it is. What is the difference?
  • krystal sauer
i am a new user of facebook. by facebook using a new layout, it would become a hassle to me,(and others like me)to have to learn a whole new layout. the layout that facebook uses now, is simple and easy to use and learn. i think that keeping it the way it is, is the right choice. please dont change that!!
  • Al
    @Derek -
Yes I do... but we don't need HD do we? Is there some true need to see every wrinkle on the face of the newscaster with an 80" HD tv? I was looking to buy a tv this summer and couldn't find one that wasn't plasma, LCD, HD, etc. - it's not necessary, it's just something a few people want and many want to sell because you can charge more for it. As far as the video games go, those upgrades weren't needed either, and frankly neither were the originals. You want to drive a go kart or golf, go outside and do it - why sit in front of your massive tv and pretend because it "looks like" the real thing? Finally, the computer upgrades were not always necessary, but many were simply due to the increasing amount of emphasis put on computers and technology for business and scientific advancements that are needed to help people live safer and healthier lives.
  • Al
    @Carol -
I completely agree with you, about both the new facebook and Paul - that's exactly what he is, very angry and replying as though they are personal attacks on him! Let's just hope we get our choice back soon!
  • Al
P.S. Don't bother agruing back at me, which I'm sure you will, because I have way more important things than checking up on here. Chances are I won't remember this by tomorrow - tests, projects, work, meetings, class, graduating, job-hunting, and still keeping a social life are much more important to me than this.
  • Al
    @Paul -
It's not censoring your opinions when you're attacking people, calling them stupid or their opinions stupid, or impersonating other people because you've been blocked for rude or offensive behavior. It's keeping someone away no matter what they have to say because you're offending people. You wouldn't have been blocked, I'm sure, if you hadn't been so rude. I personally don't like the new one because it is too complicated - I liked the simplicity of the old one. I have tried to find things and learn about it, but it doesn't run well on my computer - despite my computer being only 1 month old and having very little on it taking up any space to slow it down. Don't attack others because they don't agree with you - you have your opinion and they have theirs, the dislike of the new facebook doesn't seem to even concern you as someone who likes the new facebook, so why are you spending so much time on here agruing for them to learn to like it? As you said, shouldn't we all be out doing something more productive - helping the community, exercising, etc? As for me, I happened upon this site by accident while doing some exec board business through facebook because I finally had a night off of working and meetings - I've done my part for the community, maybe you should stop attacking people all day on here and do the same; and if you think you have done this, do more because I don't think you've done enough if you have this much time to spend on a website complaining that people are complaining too much.
  • Cheyo Pimienta
    Hi there, Linux user here...

The new facebook is simply TOO heavy!! i cant load it in any of my browsers whitout experiencing a big slowdown on my browser, i thinik its bcuz all those advertistments, scripts and apps... My two cents on this is suggest FB team to Make apps execute "on demand" (that is, clicking in a image link of the "click here to play blah blah" kinda of behavior) and limit the number of opened ones in personal pages...
  • Jon
    @Pip Doumas -

I love the new facebook but it is a pretty drastic change. They might have done better for the everyday user to come up with something in between the new and the old. As a web professional I adapt very quickly and more eagerly accept change.

Listen to your users, facebook. Not just the extreme views of yay or nay. Find out what people don't like about the new interface and what they miss about the old and I bet there's a sweet spot in the middle. The new facebook adds a lot of value in my opinion but if people don't understand how to use it then you've failed them. Trust me, I know... I've made the same mistake.
  • John Louden
    old is better by far
  • Matthew D Smith
    if it ain't broken...
    don't fix it,

What were they thinking behind the new one,
you need glasses on your glasses and a GPS to find ones way around the new one...

Bring back the Old original appplication.
  • Binna
@Carol - You go, Girl! You ROCK! :)
  • Definitely I choose the old facebook 100%
  • Kay
I am a middle-aged woman who began using Facebook at the urging of my 26 year old daughter so that we could stay in contact with photos and comments. I found it was so easy to use! But since then, the new Facebook makes me so frustrated!!! I am using the new Facebook, but find it cumbersome, slow, not intuitive, emphasizes advertising (that is probably the real reason for the change--money is EVERYTHING in this culture), and that there is way too much disjointed "news feed." I loved having what I wanted on my profile page--not having to flip thru tabs to see what I want and see pertinent info on others. Not enough info on profile pages--WAY too much info in these stupid news feeds!!!!! Even with adjusting that option, it still sucks.
  • Jenine Tepsa
I like the old Facebook. Hate the new layout.
  • Jenine Tepsa
    I like the old Facebook.
  • Laura
I was super excited when my college was finally put on Facebook and I was able to join! I uploaded all of my pictures, used Facebook mobile and text alerts, stayed in touch with friends, and I gotta say, I loved it! I feel bad that I don't use the new facebook nearly as much because I was such an avid fan of the site. The changes are awkward and confusing. Even after I gave it a hopeful shot and tried to like it, I couldn't help but think that someone went terribly wrong with the new layout. The option to switch between the two was good for me because instead of cursing the computer when I couldn't find my bumper stickers or got tangled in the news feed/wall, I would simply click the mouse to find that familiar layout that I had come to understand. I understand not everyone dislikes the new layout, but the lovely people at facebook need to understand that many of those who do are frequent and long time users and deserve to have their concerns addressed. After all, the users are the reason the site is as big as it is.
  • Laurie lil*monkey
What I miss most is the cluster of icons underneath your profile pic... they are so cute, and made it so easy to go to applications. I tried the Beta Facebook and HATED HATED HATED it, so I switched back... only to discover a few weeks later that original Facebook was gone forever. Please bring original Facebook back!!!! Hey, protesting worked to bring back original Coke, didn't it???? Come on, people!
  • Trenton matuszak
the old facebook is way better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Change is good. But too much too soon without a choice is bedlam. Isn't America supposed to be a democracy? (Not that facebook is, but I'm just sayin'.) I agree with some of the other comments I've heard. I think we should have a choice. It's obvious that most people do NOT like the new facebook, so let's bring back the old, or at least a choice. I MISS MY OLD FACEBOOK!!!
  • Dewayne
I would also like to see the old version of facebook stay ! Or atleast have a choice to switch to the old version like Myspace.com does! Why does Facebook need to be changed anyway when everyone is happy with the way it was ?
  • Tay Guy-Duncan
It is Just a Screw up!!!! Errors all the time wasting time less time on sharing with my Family lots I dont see Lots i dont want to see like late late notifications it just very disappointing and i want to have the choice!!!!!!!
  • Cynthia
The problem I have with the New Facebook is half my things i can't even find and when I want to add something to my page I want to be able to add it why have flairs if you can't even see them. And delete posts and things if I want to. I also get notifications that happened months ago. I like change if it inhances the experience, but this doesn't it only makes it difficult or impossible.
  • Carol
Wow! I read all the postings, yep right to the bottom of the page. You are one angry guy Paul...why? You are reacting like all of these comments abouthe New Facebook are a personal attack on you. I am the mother of 6 grown children and grandmother of 10. So I ahve learned to listen to what people don't say. You are very sad and I beleive very lonely. I too don't like the New Facebook for those of us who are older it is harder to deal with. I would love to have a choice...I keep in touch with all my children and their families through Facebook...would I leave? no....would I be happier if I had a choice, yes. That is all anyone wants is a choice. We are blessed to live in a country where we can have a choice many men and woman have died so that we can have a choice. And one last thing it speaks volumes about a man's character the way he speaks to woman and strangers...if any of my sons spoke to a woman the way you have I would be appalled....I feel very ashamed for you...and I'm sure your Mom would also if she read what you wrote. I expect you to lash out at me because that is what people with low self esteem do...that's ok...you take your best shot. But rest assured it will not upset me because I know that it is coming from a very small, very angry, very inmmature, very lonely man. I hope you will seek help...go back and read what you wrote with an open mind...it spills venom and is so uncalled for. @Paul -
  • darrin
just can't leave a good thing alone
  • Laura
I agree. I hate the wall and newsfeed combined. I was trying to delete some stuff out of my newsfeed and deleted wall posts without realizing it until later. I like the tabs...just separate out the wall and news feed, then put our feed back the way it was before.
  • anon
i wrote the bit to paul by the way on 24 sept 2008 6.52 am... i forgot to write one last thing....BRING BACK THE OLD FACEBOOK OR LIKE EVERYONES SAYING AT LEAST GIVE US THE CHOICE TO SWAP BACK!!!!!!
  • Stephanie
this new version is a total mess...i really think twice to open my fb...im wondering y did they do that change? it was perfect...there was no problem with the old one....now the have a half of the world unconfortable with a web page....
i just want them to respect....it should be an option....and i guess there would be like 99% who would choose the old one
  • Priyata Thapa
I seriously don't feel like I am using our very own facebook-the new one is weird and too uncomfortable
  • Mazen

all i have to say is...the new facebook is TRULY crap. everyone i know absolutely hates it. definatly need to bring back the old one.
  • anon
    @ paul...

i came across this web page by accident, but hav read alot of the stuff on it, and paul i think you need to lissento your self, what was it you said? you people need to get a life, get out more in the fresh air, or something very similar to that!! i think the only person who needs to get a life is you!!! you are a very arrigant self centered person! and must be very sad and lonely to spend all your time here. yes you can voice your opinion but why get so aggresive about it, no one eles is!! one last thing you seem like a complete prick!! and i appologise to every1 eles on here for saying that, i dont usually get irate about things but he has really annoyed me about some of the things he's said.
  • Kevin
The invasive frontpage of the new layout prominently displays everyones updates merged into our own - this sort of information was better kept to the separate "home" page.

The tab system is unwieldy, and prevents users from modifying their page to their liking. We're left we're a a lot of blank space.

Simply applying a restriction on the number of applications a person can load on their page would have been sufficient. An application filter would be optimal.

The old layout could easily be modified to load new ads after a certain number of clicks. Why not give users the option of layouts 1 or 2, and let them choose their preference.

    Case closed.
  • Caty
I just want a choice. For a while you could "test" out the new facebook, and if you didn't like it, you could go back to the old one. Why can't the users who like the new design use said new design, and the users who prefer the old design use the old one? I don't understand why I don't have any say as a user.
  • Susan
    @Pip Doumas -

It's really sad that they made these sweeping changes to Facebook - it used to be classy and simple.
In my opinion - it's a mess now!
  • Kevin McNeil
Dude this new layout sucks. I dont know where anything is. I dont even get on anymore.

  • Moriah
I hate the new layout it needs to go back to the old one so that I can find all my stuff again.
  • Melissa
Face Book was a great easy way to keep in touch with family and frinds quickly in this busy world. I find the New face Book does not work properly and is too slow. It's a great service but not worth the time and frustration.
  • Linda DeMars
I seem to have had the new version longer than most of my friends or my adult children so, I have had weeks of trying to get used to it.
The only thing I like about it, is the Applications button near my computers Start button.
There are things I just can't find any more so I have been avoiding my own Profile page! Insane! I googled Old Facebook Layout and found it. My daughter's friends have already changed back.
I feel that there seems to be alot more people who dislike the new format but are the 'don't rock the boat' type and will just keep struggling instead of standing up for what they beleive.
Personally, being one of the first to have it...I dread looking at it! I hate it more and more every day.
  • Brian Wong
    I'm sorry...but it simply sucks!
  • Ami
I hate the "NEW" Facebook. I am actually contemplating just using other sites. It is a bad interface and they need to go back to the old version.
  • MELISSA
    PAUL YOU ARE SO STUPID,
    KISS MY ASS
    I LOVE OLD FACEBOOK!
  • Hello Scott,

Thank you for your efforts in trying to save the original Facebook.

I also appreciate your advice in keeping your email inbox private. You seem somewhat bothered by all the attention from a million and half viewers! Excellent work.

Keep going with all that great studying and schooling you are involved in, don't let anything get in the way of finishing your dreams and goals. Never quit and never give up. Keep going forward in spite of any obstacle or challenge that is put in front of you.
    Marketing is a fantastic field!

Bless you and all of your friends and especially for your timely advice.

    Cordially,

    John A. Workman

The new facebook sucks. End of story. I had millions of bumber-stickers on my original profile that simply vanished with the switch, and it's a b**** trying to navigate properly. Besides, even a blind roach would notice how many people were joining the numerous "bring back old facebook" groups that have been popping up. Not only that, some people can't even use the new facebook on their computers; I tried logging on at a friends house, and all I got was a 'sorry, page not found', even when I hit the refresh button multiple times. The old facebook just works better.
  • Megan
    @Derek -

The point is, Derek, is that not all changes are good or welcomed. As so many have pointed out (although it's getting redundant), New Coke sucked and the response of the public made Coca-Cola go back to regular Coke - and employ the campaign of "Classic Coke".

I loved Windows XP over Windows 98...but I hated Windows Vista and returned to XP.

Not everybody hates new versions and formats because they're "afraid of change"...they honestly don't like the redesign!
  • Lobinhoot
Keep the old facebook available for options to us!!
  • Tatyana
    @Pip Doumas -
You say that "Of all of the blogs and groups and news pages I’ve seen, the stunningly vast majority of comments are reflecting a negative opinion regarding the new layout". Maybe, that is because people who like the new layout, or are merely indifferent, don't feel bothered enough to go out there, start petitions, start rallying for something that doesn't make a great difference, but prefer to sit back and enjoy the new layout.
  • K-Rax
But Facebook isn't listening to the simple suggestions it's customers are giving them in droves and scores, and Facebook is treating it's bread and butter users with contempt and disdain. Bring back the applications. Introduce a toggle to the old format which had a small enough memory footprint to do this. Allow the pics format grid to be customizable by the user to 4x5/5x4 and other display arrangements. Allow all the pages to be customizable by the user. This is all simple and doable. There was already the Developer app that allowed the old. Embed that into the code. That worked GREAT! I will sit back for the next week and expect this to get done.
  • Angélique
Why do you want to change it?I think it was good as it was (and i'm not the only as I can see)
PS:sorry for mistakes, but my english is far away perfection lol
  • @Paul -
I should be able to decide what my page in facebook looks like. The new facebook does not give me this option which is leading me to look elsewhere to socially market.
  • Allison Stone
I like aspects of both but very much prefer the old version. I prefer facebook over myspace but with this new version you're turning into myspace and that sucks!
  • Brent
i like the old facebook much easier to understand if you were going to change anything you should have just let us have skins on our profile like myspace does.
  • Derek
I forgot to mention one thing. For all you "Don't fix what isn't broken" people out there, look around you. Analog TV's work fine, why make HD? Playstation and Xbox work fine, why Xbox 360 and PS2 and PS3? Windows 98 worked fine, why Windows XP? You see where I'm going with this right?@Derek -
  • Derek
Facebook changed for more ad revenue?? Can someone give me a legit link to a news post where a Facebook representative admitted to that?

And these petitions? Come on folks, remember News Feed? No dice there either, and most of you like it now.

I've seen no slower load times or crashes (I use Firefox, IE, and Google Chrome for testing on several different machines with drastically different Internet connections) and actually faster profile loads because of them splitting up everything. I like it, because why do I want to scroll through my friends personal info every time I visit the page? I already know that stuff.

I saw pay per use on here somewhere...pretty sure I'm still on for free and they have no intention of making it that way, but if so can you also provide a legit news post for that too?

This was mentioned too....Facebook owns the ENTIRE site....this means the apps on your page, the domain you access, the server you store your photos, etc. They can do what they want, when they want, without informing you or caring about your opinion.

Speaking of opinion, for at least 6 months there was open discussion for site design straight to the developers. How many of you voiced your opinions there, told them what you thought (in a civilized manner), and looked at the initial design. Because some actually talked to them, the new Facebook is different than the developers first designed.

I am not surprised about the number of members outraged about this, but right now I think your number comes in at around 10 million (that have actually come out and said "Hey, this sucks!"). That being said, and based on the latest statistics I found (June 2008) Facebook pulled in around 132 million unique visitors to its site. So, minus you 10 million (give or take), that makes 120 million visitors per month. Thats still 3 million more than rival Myspace. You see the math. Your supposed withdrawal from Facebook will barely dent their numbers. (Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook)

And here are the most current stats from Facebook itself (http://www.new.facebook.com/press/info.php?stat...). I give all of you great respect for voicing your opinion, that's what social networking is about! But in the end, assuming that there are at least 10 million of you willing to leave Facebook in the dust and that Facebook has exactly 100 million members (giving you 10% of total users) Facebook won't change back, people will still use and join as regular as they are now, and everyone will like or deal with it.
  • Stacy
the new facebook sucks. it's very complicated and disorganized. what was so wrong with the original format that you had to change it? I like the original format much better! It should be changed back to the original format or at least give us the option to use the original format if we want to and not force this crappy new format down our throats!!
  • Michael
You all need to stop complaining. The new facebook is fine, just give it a chance. And they're working on perfecting it. Facebook is going to stick with it no matter how many petitions are made. They want a change. And those who say they're going to leave if facebook doesn't change it back, go ahead. I doubt you'll do it, because it won't matter.
  • ami
why would you change something that was perfect the way it was???
  • I don't use facebook that much anymore because its not as user friendly as before.
I'm not excited at all about the changes.
Some things improved, most things didn't. Can we have the best of both worlds?
I used to swear by Facebook, now... meh
  • Kyle
I started using myspace more after Facebook changed formats. The old version was easier to navigate. I hate the new format. Maybe Facebook is doing this to lose some of its users? They need to allow the old version option if they are going to keep this new version.
  • paul
why is it then when something works great someone comes along who has nothing better to do and is in need of more money decides that it needs a change, WELL IT DID NOT NEED A CHANGE , if i wanted myspace i would have joined there site,
  • amy
i do not like new fb at ALL. my computer is old and cannot hack it - it keeps crashing JUST LIKE IT DOES WHEN I OPEN MYSPACE.
come on fb, dont be another myspace... RETAIN YOUR COOLNESS DAMMIT!
  • aneela
    I NEED OLD FACEBOOK PLEASE
  • Connie
It's funny to me how people get so into this, typing in all caps and such. I don't even read those comments. Not that that even matters to anybody on here, but... anyways, I digress.

I'm not sure how many people would agree with me on this, but the reason that I don't like the big change is that I don't really have the time to sit down and learn the new facebook like I want to. I used to just check it like my email, maybe do a little checking up on my friends, but the new facebook is a little more confusing to try to manage. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually because I have too many friends that I would otherwise not be able to keep up with if I cancelled my account.

There are some cool things about the new facebook though. I've noticed that I am not being bombarded with new applications everytime I check my fb. I don't know if that's a change in facebook, or my friends can't manage to find how to work the new apps. Either way, I like that. :)

I'm all for giving facebook a makeover. I think it's starting to act too much like myspace, anyways. (Or rather, myspace acting is too much like facebook...) But maybe try the new changes in small doses, so users can cope a little better. Ha, I try to think of my older sister using the new facebook. She could barely even manage the old facebook.
  • Jennie
@Pip Doumas - One of the main reason's I switch from myspace to facebook was because of the way it was set up and how easy it was, the old facebook had all of my friends on my list leaving myspace and converting to facebook as well, since the switch I don't frequent it as much and asked ppl if they need or want to get a hold of me to just email me, I dislike facebook now and want the original version to come back, it was very user friendly and was very easy.........Someone somewhere will start a new site just as the FACEBOOK creators did and make it more user friendly then facebook will be without all the user's.......CONSIDER YOUR TRAFFIC..........

I love your idea as well, but I don't think many would go for that,
esp. when there isn't any other alternative to f/b ..
and lots of ppl are kind os addicted to it too.. so what to doooo..????
  • Oopsy Daisy
    @Brandi Adams -

I totally agree with you , infact that's what I've been telling my frnds that f/b gonna loose lots of users, and then there gonna start going down too,
cuz of the advertising, I strongly think and agree they should bring back the old f/b or at least the option as you sugested.. :):)
  • Oopsy Daisy
I'm really up set abt the fact that new f/b put a limit on each individual's posts, how weird is that???
    Goddddddd...I'm so frantic abt it..
I admin 8 froups, how am I suppose to get my msges out to them esp. wall posts ...????
    I WANT OLD F/B BACKKKKKKKK...

  • tracey skinsley
why change a good thing and ruin peoples facebooking.i hate the new facebook.stop dictating to facebook users which version they should be using you asked our advice on which facebook we prefered its obvious which one people did prefer as the majority of them switched back to the old facebook having sampled the new version.yes i know you own the rights and are in the position to do whatever you want with your facebook but why would anyone want to shoot themselves in the foot because that is what you have done.bring back the old facebook as an option for those majority of us who wish to use it.
  • Michael
I think the new facebook is fine the way it is, so stop complaining so much you crybabies it's just a layout not the end of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Megan
    @Miranda Pandaqueen -

Miranda - actually when you post something on a funwall, it will show up on Everyone's newsfeed/wall - something I don't like.
  • Brandi Adams
I would really have to agree with all of these people. Facebook was an easy and great site to navigate around and to use. Many people do NOT like the new change, including myself. The downloading time is rediculous and the "new facebook" freezes up a lot of the time. I cannot find many of the things that I could before and I just don't appreciate being thrown into something new without the choice to go back to the old. I know that there are many new and great things on the "new facebook" but there should always be the option of the "old facebook" for anyone who wants it. Facebook may lose many of their valued users if they do not give this option to us. If they value us, they will give us the option...let's hope!

    For the "Old Facbook"!
  • Chris
A business does have to listen to it's customers, otherwise they'd go bankrupt. The problem here is people are just complaining and so Facebook is not listening because people are still using the service. The only way to send a message is to boycott Facebook altogether.
  • i hate the new facebook i wonder why you guys changes it? thats sucks
  • matyy
I am using the new design since the switch was there - got used to it and I like it way more. Applications will become compatible, you will get used to it, I think you shouldn't waste so much time about something that insignificant.
  • Mindy
I prefer the old facebook , i dnt like the fact that everyone has access to see my wall and everything else , and it was easier to access everything in the old format. Some facebook things run really crappy on my comp and it takes forever to get from "A to B". You dont need to fix what aint broken.....
  • Cherylene Bell
I just like the old one much better, bring it back
  • Nik
If it ain't broke; don't fix it.

The old Facebook was fine as it was. I can see what they've tried to do with the new Facebook, but it just hasn't worked.

I am getting used to the new one, but if I had the choice to go back still; I would.

It's also sooo much slower than the old one - it's painful!!

I agree that something needed doing because some people's pages just took FOREVER to load because they had some many applications, but they've gone about things the wrong way.

And forcing people to use this new version is just not on. We should at least have the choice.
  • Mike
How does that saying go?........If it aint broken, dont fix it!
  • Hayley
Why change something that is sooo popular & clearly works well!!!???
  • NewFacebookRules
well if they are just people 'keeping in touch' then stop whining about your applications....you don't need them to keep in touch.

And oh god no.....you have to click more?!?!? I feel so bad for you :(
  • Dawn
I know that we are all creatures of habit and don't like change but as some others have said, you have to click on two or more links to get to where you want to go making it harder to navigate for people who are computer eliterate. I would say that alot of facebook members are just people keeping in touch and do not know much about computers. I will not be leaving because of the change but I will probably use it less.
  • Len
There has been some good argument here. Family members use facebook who are computer illiterate, glitches and the increase in ads. I live in an area with low IT speed before I could navigate with one click. Now I need three or four and it is so much slower to use.

Can also point out the comments made by some of the developers

"Only teenage girls will drop out and regret it later"

“I have a physics degree therefore I know better than you"

"Nobody likes change they may whinge a bit like girls at first but then they will get used to it"

    "Get a life"

These are some of the responses by developers. These guys do not care what we think and are condescending toward us. If you met this attitude in a shop you would walk out never to return.

    Keep up the fight!
  • Leah
I hate the new facebook. I find it confusing and I don't like how completely different it is than the facebook I originally signed up for.

I know people hate change, and I know that as a business they have the right to change it without our approval, but that doesn't make it suck any less.

What they should have done is introduced small changes one at a time over a long period of time. The reason people are so upset is because it is such a drastic change. I was all for keeping an option open, but I wasn't thinking about how much it costs the company. However, they supported it for quite a while when they gave us a choice originally, and if they can support it for that long why can't they keep it like that?

The adding of applications got to be a little much, so they should have installed a limit.
The reason that so many people left myspace is because they liked the sophisiticated, simple design of facebook. Myspace made a lot of changes and has become more like the old facebook, so I may be using my myspace more. I loved the old facebook, it was so easy to use when I first got it. This new one is confusing, and because it is so different it's like I'm a new user altogether, and I find it confusing. If I was making a facebook for the first time I would probably cancel right away.
  • No.
Fuck the new layout. I never liked the News feed. I never liked the new layout. I never liked the twenty million stupid applets, because only one or two of them were cute. I will never like these things. The old facebook had a plain layout. This new one is clunky and annoying like MySpace. I want the option to nix the idiocy and keep it the way I want - the way it was originally.

New does not always equal improved.
  • ale
the reason why i dont close fb is beacause of teh photos if not just by seeing thenew one i imidiatlly cancel my acount

    i hate new FB!!!!
let us take the desision of having the old or the new just like yahoo or hotmail does!
instead of having more money i think you are lossig with this stupid design! is terrible! the only thing you are doing is makig people to close fb and switch to myspace or something else
fb: you are so stupid dude

  • Miranda Pandaqueen
The new facebook was obviously designed by someone off their head on something or another!

I hate that my wall/mini feed is the first thing people see... it feels wrong! And what's the point having a funwall or many other things? Because they are not showing people won't have a clue you posted something!

    It's all absolute crap!!!
  • lorraine za
    eww
  • @Matthew -

You've hit the nail on the head, Matt. Every time you click on a tab, a new series of ads load.

What I find ironic, is that I actually never notice the ads on new facebook other than to acknowledge how many more there are. Maybe I'm different, but on old facebook, I always noticed the ads when they were on the left side.

I found it a little creepy how they were tailored to my exact age.
  • Matthew
I'm thinking this change is all about $$$. I've noticed that every time I click on a link there are a bunch of advertisements, most of which I am not even remotely interested in.

I fully support the group that will deactivate their FB accounts (can reactivate later) on September 29th.
  • Jimmy Arllen Jr
I like having my applications that I've done on my page, and having everything right there.
And then the application section on the side, to go to whatever I choose. The old format is superior, but those who wish the new is fine, but a choice, to stay with the old, would be nice.
  • Don
I'm a working professional and haven't the time to dick around with changing layouts. The new one sucks and I already wasted too much time trying to make it presentable. If Facebook doesn't provide me instructions to make the useful boxes prominent and minimize those that are not, I will probably just cancel out. Worst of all is that Wall thing. I understand why it appeals to teenagers but I can't have that.
  • Leelah
Personally I think they both are budget and werent very good. BUT after seeing and using the new one, im DYING for the old boring one back!!!! This new one is just useless. I dont mind the ads on the side. But i do mind all the other changes
  • Will
First off I should pass along that I am not a teen but a college student. I agree with most of what has been said. I think the main issue stems from the lack of choice. I too agree that the new facebook seems to be more of an attempt to use flash wherever possible rather than making a coherent website. (I use flash as an example not a fact.) To this effect I used one of the numerous methods of returning to the old facebook. Again the simplicity of facebook and the lack of ability to put obnoxious backgrounds or colors on ones profile like some other SN sites who shall remain nameless but who are owned by MTV is what drew me to facebook in the first place. My own analogy, and you can rip me to shreds if that suits your fancy, is that Myspace is Facebook before it hit puberty. I relinquish my soapbox
  • Matt
paul, you're a very valiant man, putting forth all your might to tell off a bunch of teens on facebook...the sign of a true man. Don't we all wish we could be so courageous, so determined, don't we all wish we could have such passion for something so important as this...whiners ...in a thread...in a group...on facebook. Yes, you are a man of high caliber. Without people like you, who would stick it to those 16 year olds. Thank you Paul, from all of us.@Paul -
  • Megan
    @Tabitha -

    Tabitha :)

I definitely do like the idea of apps on another tab. But that's pretty much one of the few things I like about new facebook.

On old facebook, too many people were adding too many applications...I was guilty of that too, in fact, until I realized that it really wasn't going to hurt anyone's feelings if I didn't accept the invitations. I deleted a bunch of them, so that was better for my page, but other people still had a zillion - to the point where I wouldn't bother to go to their profile, unless I wanted to leave my computer and do something else while it loads. That IS ridiculous, and that was the user's fault.

They could have made a real improvement to old FB by just adding the tabbed application page, or limiting the number people could have. Of course then they wouldn't have been able to add 5 times the ad space.
  • Katrine
    Let us choose!
  • Leroy Vargas
The old Facebook layout allowed group admins to reposition the group profiles' different fields (recent news, wall, photos, discussion board, etc.) within and across both columns (thus allowing them to prevent a super-crowded left column by simply moving some fields to the rarely-used right column). Now with the new Facebook layout, all group fields are permanently locked to their default positions, and the left column is now prohibitively-super-crowded.
This is the biggest issue I have with the new Facebook.
What's Facebook's next move in the future? Fold the right column into the left column and get rid of it once and for all [and bring us back to 1990's-era webpage style]? Add colored profiles "à la MySpace"?

Final comment: you can still go back to the old Facebook, at least temporarily: just append "&fbnew_opt_out=1" (of course, minus the quotes) to the end of the URL (address bar) of each FB page you visit (if the URL ends with facebook.com or facebook.com/, replace the "&" with a "?") and you'll reload the same page in the old style. Of course, if you click on any link, you'll go back to the new layout, but again append "&fbnew_opt_out=1" and you'll go back to the old layout. Not a very convenient workaround, but at least it does the trick, even if it's for only a few seconds.
  • FRED
How to get back the Old Facebook style:
For those of you that can't stand the new FB layout and wish to be back in using the old one again, just follow the two steps below and you'll be on your way.

    http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id...

Click 'add application, then come back here and click:

    http://apps.new.facebook.com/?fbnew_opt_out=1

It works but i prefer the new FB :D Be happy again facebookers.

Well, I happen to like the new facebook. Apart from the minor annoyance that is the way the updates from my friends are merged with my wall, the new layout is better than the old one.

The old layout led to horribly long pages full of useless applications. Browsing through other people's pages was rather painful. Well, the owners of these pages were probably interested in all these apps, but when I only wanted to see the info in their profile it was very annoying to have to wait several minutes for the page to load, including tons of photos and applications and other crap. Now with the new layout, I only see what I am interested in instead of having to scroll down until I could find the tiny bit of profile info stuck between dozens of viral apps that were probably added once and then forgotten.

The new layout is far from perfect: it has more ads ( a necessary evil, I guess) and the combined wall/newsfeed is a bit annoying. Also, it took me several days to get used to the new placement of several features, but I eventually found my way. Despite these annoyances, I think that the new layout is better and I don't want to go back to the old one.
  • the new version seems to want to pack everything into the news feed. i would rather have my wall separate as was on the old facebook. the apparent 'wall' featured on the new facebook is hideous. there were also some better applications with the old facebook such as big photo which gave an individuals profile more character and added a more personal touch. the new facebook lacks character and should be changed back, or at least be added as an option to the many people who object to the change.
  • Stephanie
I don't really like the new facebook...but it doesn't mean Im going to delete my account, only because I have pictures on there that mean alot to me, and since my computer crashed that is the only way to keep my memories. Personally, I think even if we bitch and bitch and bitch, the designers of facebook will not listen. If they wanted our opinion really they would have sent out messages or made a group and listened to our response by that. But really people do u think they really care what we really think? ask yourself that one first.
  • the new version is too much of a chore to navigate. the 1st one was already great. some of my friends have already terminated their accountsd because of the new and confusing version.
  • Mac Dobos
There's some things I like about the new facebook. But as far as format goes, and there's a lot of "hey where'd that thing go..?" seems to happen a lot.
    The old Facebook is better.

I wouldn't mind at all for my applications to be on a separate tab. And by doing this, it would clear up a ton of space of my profile page. This is what I want too!! The new FB is ridiculously harder and more complicated to use. I would love for it to go back to it's more simpler layout and access to everything. I also want to be able to minimize my applications if I want to-I don't always want them open as some of them take up a lot of room.

I know you aren't going to like hering this but the new facebook is a perfect example of poor website design. It takes away functionality from the users.

The fact that 40% of the users disliked it enough to find the bar and switch back shows that there is a serious problem with it. Also the stats do not show the percentage of facebook users that are regular users or occasional. I found myself forced into previewing it one day. If I was an occasional user I most likely would have just left the "New and Unimproved" version running.

Currently I have discovered I can bookmark my favourite apps and skip the rest of the facebook experience. It works wonders.
  • SOMEONE
@Megan - I would like too keep the original facebook but to add more stuff like colored profiles or wallpapers or somthin really facebook is good like it is and some people really like it so just give them a chance cuz i might disable my account so
  • Megan
    @Christina -

Nicely put, Christina. The fact that Paul created more than 12 identites (several of them posing as other people) in the space of 12 hours, is very creepy and abusive...and extremely pathetic.

Like a wise person wrote above...

"what I can see written across him in bold letters is LOW SELF ESTEEM. He suffers from a lack-of-relevance complex so he gets a feeling of fulfillment by stalking and upsetting people obsessively which explains the multiple ids. Whoever you are, go get some help. Seriously."
  • George
I tried the new facebook for several weeks. Figured it was inevitable and that the challenges it offered in usability were just something I would have to get used to. But it really does suck! The more I used it, the more I hated it. The design is not intuitive. Things that used to be one click away are now multiple clicks away. Nothing is organized as nicely as before, so you never have a real sense of what's going on because you have to go into various "rooms" for lack of a better analogy to access different pieces of info. The original interface was compact and efficient. I agree with the post that suggested a limit on third-party applications to resolve some of the problems. I have no difficulty with advertising on Facebook -- there has to be a revenue model. But the spirit of community that makes Facebook what it is becomes secondary, which destroys allegiance and support for the platform itself. As someone involved in the advertising industry, I know how important it is to maintain the essence of the brand as you create revenue opportunities. The new Facebook design is wrong in too many areas. It needs to be rethought
  • Paul
"It feels way, way more stalkerish."

learn to use the privacy settings! and if you feel someone is stalking you, then maybe make sure you know the person before you add them as a friend...
  • Christina
    @ Paul:

I agree wholeheartedly with you that you have the right to express your thoughts and opinions. What is at issue here is the manner in which you express your opinions. When you infringe upon others' rights to be treated respectfully by responding (or initiating) in an abusive manner, you lose the right to voice your opinion. Other people have voiced their opinions in a respectful manner, even when they differ from you, and they deserve the same courtesy. You may have the right to voice your opinion, but you do not have the right to abuse others.

As to the new layout, people have always strived to make things more simple. The original layout was simple; everything was on one page and when you wanted more of an application or feature -- photos, for example -- you simply clicked on it to see all of it. It makes no sense to go from simple to complicated, which is what has been done here. You've gone backwards and ruined what was simple and fun, and we, quite simply, would like for you to change it back.
  • I don't want to add more oil to the flames here, but let's just say that I'm not a fan of the new Facebook. I find it inconvenient, cluttered, and disorganized. Like several users here, I was appealed by Facebook's simplicity, and it would be a pity if Facebook were to lose even that aspect because of drastic changes.

Even before launching Beta, Facebook should have had a poll for users to decide which format they preferred. Doing so would have been smart on Facebook's part. I think it would be apt for Facebook to offer users the options of going back to the old one or keeping the new one. That way everyone's happy, right?
  • The final tally for the petition to remove the news feed was 113,000 you stupid fuck.
  • Nick
IF THEY DON'T CHANGE IT BACK, I SAY WE ALL LEAVE AND GO TO MYSPACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Please please please! Keep the option of switching back to the old facebook, and that way it'll be fair for the people who do like and those who don't. Cuz I most certainly do now :)
  • David
This is reminiscent of when Coca-Cola introduced the "new" Coke to take the place of the "classic" Coke -- nobody liked it, a lot of people complained, and yes, the "new" Coke disappeared and the old Coke came back. So keep up the pressure if you really don't like the new facebook. I myself don't use facebook much in any form, so it doesn't matter that much to me, but letting people have options is always nice!
  • @miracle14 -

    Hi Miracle,

I really appreciate you for responding to ME so maturely, even as you disagree.

I completely get what you're saying, and I agree that the old facebook is better. If I could choose one or the other, it would certainly be the simple old format.

But since it seems unlikely that they're going to agree to give us the option, and spend the time and money to support two platforms, I'm trying to look at it in another way. Creators of applications would also have to make two versions.

And when it comes to the bottom line, they aren't going to be keen to give up the hugely increased ad revenue.

So I have been watching and noting where they are making changes to the beta version. I do think it's incredibly unfair that they are forcing us to use it (not all are forced, but my switch back button is gone) without all the bugs worked out. That was very sloppy and very tacky of them.
  • lucy
The new layout looks like the sites I've left because I preferred FB's simplistic style. Everyone loved FB as it was so why change it?! The stats speak for themselves - hopefully they'll listen to us as very few people are in support of the new layout. Please leave it alone!!
  • Lisa
This is like Bell Canada or Tim Hortons. It doesn't matter to the company if you get bad service because so many people use this service one doesnt matter. So we have to suck it up and go with the change. There is nothing anyone can do.

I agree that the wall and mini feed should be seperate. I just missed a visit from an out of town guest because I couldent read my wall properly.

I also liked entering a profile with applications around. I had mine set up with a few applications that decorated my profile. It woulden't be half bad if there was a applications tab where you had a page where all your applications were and you could arrange them. I miss the big profile pictures above my wall.

I'm disapointed that I have to get used to a website I dont prefer just to keep in touch with family and friends. I wont change sites because I have all of my family members on here. So I am forced to use it. It's sad, I wish they never changed it.
But these petitions will do nothing, this is a big company and the smalls guys don't matter.
  • Samantha
I hate new facebook. It is so slow i gave up loading certain application. It takes ages just to load your friends list.

We don't need the world to know every stroke we make on facebook and who in hell have time to browse through everthing.

It use to be so simple and friendly.

YOU ARE NOT MAKING SEXY, YOU ARE MAKING IT LOOK LIKE A RUBBISH DUMB.

Who in hell came up with the idea?????? Shouldn't the users be give an option or vote for something. We use it daily and we know what is best for us.

Looks here you are only successful if all of us use your page.
  • Gareth
The new layout SUCKS!! I cant even opt out of it now. Im leaving facebook and taking all my friends with me! You management have your heads so far up each others asses I cant even begin to understand it.
  • Yaz
I agree, facebook was different to all other social sites, user friendly and fun and no pretentiousness about it compared to the others however now i find that its tried to be more than it is. Why move everything to different areas? the whole point of a profile page is to have everything on it, not to change it to all different locations, no one has time for that! and yes it also increases the loading time, my computer personally cannot handle that, as i am sure other people's can't. I think facebook will seriously lose out on users because of this change and it can be easily amended by giving us the option of changing back! Why can't be meet in the middle and have this option? I also think by having to select "read more" on wall posts is pathetic, OBVIOUSLY i want to read more as what is the point of reading the first three lines only from a message that has been sent to me? Is it there to create more space? Well to create more space you could try not putting all MY wall posts on my wall for a start. It has been very badly designed and it annoys me that some idiot is getting paid a fortune for this crappy idea that no one likes! For once, listen to the people that are actually USING your service and you will become a lot more popular. Otherwise I think this could be a drastic fall back for facebook which is highly unecessary.
  • Moghisa
Well, with the passage of time, things change so does technology is growing. It is bit surprising that I found that so many people felt the same way I did, rather mostly people didn't like the change , It might be more improved version but seems not the favourite one. I think it was not necessary at all.
  • miracle14
    Dear Meg,

Thank you for your message. A message that communicates maturity and care. However, let not these qualities you have blind you from the fact that I want my old facebook period, and so do many. To insinuate that people want at least a little change is mis-leading. The only compromise I am willing to offer is to have an option that will let you use beta or the old. You will then notice that most users will use the old, and will not ask for small changes.
  • Mary
Didn't we all join Facebook for the convenience and simplicity of use? The new version has neither of those qualities and is unbearably slow. If we would all boycott for just a week, the advertisers would pay attention, and Facebok would get the message.
  • Megan
    @Ellie -

"3. It feels way, way more stalkerish. This was a complaint that first surfaced with the introduction of the News Feed, and the new FaceBook has just compounded the problem. I went on my cousin’s page earlier and was immediately confronted with her status updates and wall posts, whether I wanted to see these things or not. Normally I would have decided whether to scroll down to her wall or not, but with the new FaceBook I have no choice. It may only seem like a little thing, but when you have fanily members on FaceBook it can make the difference between staying in touch and feeling like you’re intruding on their personal life."

Ellie, this is probably my biggest complaint. I've used the same word - stalkerish. I hate that I'm confronted with all this information about my friends, and even worse, I hate that everyone else is monitoring my activity.

I don't understand the reasoning at all behind this - if there is any. It's ridiculous.
  • michelle
it's simple...the new facebook is boring to look at... it won't let me have what i want where i want it. it looks like some office crap, not personal at all. if it had started out like this i would not have bothered. AND you should know better than to use the excuse that we all had a chance before.. i know common sense isn't that common..but we are human beings and you should at least be familiar with their natures.... and it's NOT-whoohoo someone is going to take something we are familiar with and change it so let's all get pumped up about it and use it now. get real, and get the old facebook back.
  • Ellie
I am generally the sort of person that enjoys change like this, and dives head first into new things with what is often called indecent enthusiasm. I did so with the 'new' FaceBook and within 30 seconds had reverted to the old Facebook. That was not because I am change-resistant, bloody awkward or technophobic, it was because I genuinely fail to see how the new FaceBook is an improvement in ANY sense:

    1. It is no easier to navigate - on the contrary it is far harder to navigate than the old FaceBook.

    2. It is unnecessary - yes, there were problems with the old FaceBook, but any of those problems REALLY awful enough to justify such a drastic and complete overhaul? I suspect not.

    3. It feels way, way more stalkerish. This was a complaint that first surfaced with the introduction of the News Feed, and the new FaceBook has just compounded the problem. I went on my cousin's page earlier and was immediately confronted with her status updates and wall posts, whether I wanted to see these things or not. Normally I would have decided whether to scroll down to her wall or not, but with the new FaceBook I have no choice. It may only seem like a little thing, but when you have fanily members on FaceBook it can make the difference between staying in touch and feeling like you're intruding on their personal life.

    4. The ads. The ads now reload every time you switch to a different part of someone's page, and it smacks of stealth advertising, which I object wholeheartedly. If you want to increase the number of adverts on FaceBook, why not try being honest with the users about that? It really could be as simple as pure honesty, Mr Zuckerberg and Co: try it for once. Please, before you destroy your own creation.

I am not saying the following for effect or sensation, I am saying it because it is true:

I am going back to MySpace. Yes, that ancient networking site I abandoned when FaceBook came along, is the one I am going back to. At least when MySpace revamped they left the option in place to go back to the old format.

Are FaceBook going to do that? Are they hell.

    Au revoir FaceBook.
  • biggest facebook hater
    Facebook:
You may not want to believe this but just because you created Facebook doesn't mean you control everything. We the users of Facebook have a bigger influence than you think. Seriously, look at the poll, 92% prefer the original facebook, If that doesn't tell you something you better get your eyes checked. If you force us to use the new facebook, you will lose TONS of customers which will cost you alot of money. Head our warning before you make a costly business decision.
  • Sharon Wenham
Why is it that whenever you get the hang of something, someone has to come along and change it? Please leave us with, at least the option of, the old Facebook
  • Mylnda
It would be nice if the team behind Facebook would give us a vote and go with the majority. I will definitely be on the lookout for an alternative if forced into the new Facebook because no Facebook is better than the new Facebook.
  • Steffan
Many of you are advocating an option to go back to the old Facebook in addition to the new one. One question: are any of you programmers? I doubt many of you are. I am. I know from experience how difficult it is to maintain something like this, much less two of them at the same time. Two skins, slight changes in color or look and feel of the page, are easy enough. But not two entirely different layouts, two entirely different ways of accessing your data and everyone else's. Facebook would essentially have to double their programming team just to support it and keep it current. That doubles costs. And while some people would be willing to pay for Facebook, most would not.

Personally, I like the new Facebook. It reminds me of when I changed from IE to Firefox: a little slower maybe, but much more attractive and organized.
  • Paul
if you think you can hurt facebook by leaving and cost em money, think again. If money was the only thing they were worried about they could sell the site to Yahoo or Google for over 1 Billion Dollars (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB115880835590769...).

Heck microsoft purchase a 1.6% share of facebook for close to 250 million back in 07.

we want the old facebook baaaak PLZZZZ
  • Maxine
I like the old facebook better the new facebook takes longer to load, and you don't have the option like you did before to opt out of certain things like allowing advertisers to see your personal details it just takes you right to the application. Facebook is one big marketing scam anyways so the last thing that I want is my details being stolen by advertisers!

Another thing I can't find my applications! I have to search around looking for them. Some don't even load, and when you finally do get to them they take so long the network times out! The new Facebook SUCKS!!
  • Molly
Yeah I think it was better and fairer to give facebook users the choice to use either the new or old layout. And by adding that choice everyone would be happy (unless ur waaay whiny haha jk) but as for PAUL cleary you havn't seen the other groups against the new facebook. There are at least 5 with over a million. So next time don't make up numbers to make people think your right or whatever. And everyone has their own opinions but you dont have to be mean about. Say what you mean, mean what you say, but dont be mean when you say it.
  • Nadia
At least give us the option to choose which one we prefer to use.

    Much Appreciated :)
  • me
you can switch back to the old one. i find the old version way more confusing than this site should be to start... the new one 10x more confusing. whose in charge of this design anyway?! they need some lessons in practicality and asthetics, thats for sure.
  • pita
    new layout looks like myspace.
and we all do know how myspace sucks!
  • heather pagano
the new facebook is so unorganized. if you started with the old one, why would u change it? when u got your old members on the old, and what? none on the new i bet. if you want more members you'll let them decide not yourself.
  • i dont know i kinda like it

it is organized i can actually read it the one before it had been jumbled

i have stated my opnion now i will get cussed out and yelled at and asked why did join in the first place

I have an EASY SOLUTION to the problem of people cluttering their profiles with useless applications:

Simply give each individual user the option of viewing peoples' profiles WITH the third-party applications, or viewing them WITHOUT the third-party applications.

    It's as SIMPLE as THAT.
  • Dennis Peacock
I happen to like the look and the feel of the new Facebook. It loads faster, easier on the computer, and is better laid out. While I did like the old look? I like the new look even better.
  • Liss
"Another alternative is to take your friends, fork up the cash for a domain and server, and start your own site. And if it happens to catch on just wait until you see what it costs to maintain and operate a site of facebooks calibure and i bet ya you won’t put up with people (who don’t pay a membership or any type of fee) tell you what you can do with your site. "

I love how you try to be all diplomatic here. First of all, I would gladly pay for Facebook. So don't even use that as an argument. Second of all, it's not like these people are paying for these serves out of their pockets just out of the goodness and generosity of their hearts in an effort to provide social networking for free. The servers are paid for by the advertisements that we have always seen on facebook. And since it has millions of users, they can charge a pretty penny for ad space. They are definitely coming out on top, so don't even.
  • Linda Yen
Take it from someone who's been in the business world for a long time...the customer is always right. In this case the customers aren't just telling you what they think; they're screaming at the top of their lungs. I am very dissappointed that FB isn't listening. I wouldn't be too surprised if business starts to take a hit.
  • "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The new facebook is a confusing joke. I never would have signed up for my own page if it had been in the new format to begin with. "K.I.S.S. ~ Keep It Simple Stupid." The simplicity of the old facebook is easy to navigate. The new facebook is difficult to set up, illogical to use, and actually hinders me from seeing what I want to see on my friends' profiles. I can no longer collapse apps on my single, delightfully simple page to make it easier for my friends to navigate. It is now no longer a pleasure to pop in briefly, check my stuff & go on with the rest of my day. You had a really good thing, & now you're destroying it.
  • Christin
@Tiffany - I think we're pretty much on the same page with this whole ordeal.
  • Christin
    @Tiffany - I agree with Tiffany....totally agree!
  • Christin
I also MUCH PREFER the OLD facebook. It is much easier to follow. Why change something that isn't broke? All that's happening is people are getting aggravated and it's causing a whole lot of complaints and petitions that really don't need to be happening. If Facebook had just been left as it was, which was absolutely fine according to many as far as what I've seen and read on here then alot of people would be happy.
  • Tiffany
I understand that you want to make a new & fresh Facebook, but that's really unecessary. The new layout is too confusing! I tried the new layout for a few days, & I couldn't find all my stuff. I tried to navigate the pages, but if I did find some stuff, within a minute I was confused on something else. I prefer the old layout as well as many others. I hate to say this, but I think you might lose a lot of Facebook members, if you don't let us have a choice. For the people who do like the new layout, keep it up for them. However, for the majority of members who don't like the new layout, I believe it would be a wise business choice if you let us choose, which layout we want. I know you're trying to make Facebook less cluttered, but honestly I find it to be more cluttered. There are too many links, & pages to know what goes to what. So, for the good of the members, and for the good of the company of Facebook I believe it would be wise decision for you to let us choose which layout the members (like me) want. It would be the best thing for everyone involved.

facebook is run by a couple of young guys with as much wisdom as a toaster. They need to make their own mistakes, but this change is a big mistake in every sense except monetarily to them. More clicks equals more ads equals more money... when in doubt, always follow the money.
Seriously, they don't give a rats about their users and all hopes of forcing a sea change in their thinking towards dissenters is perhaps delusion defined to perfection.
The net result (sadly) is take it or leave it, they are offering no other choice... like I said, they don't give rats.
  • picture
Everyone like the old facebook because they know how to use it. But there have been quite a few changes since I originally became a member. And people got over them. They learned how to use the changes, and forgot about them.

Obviously ads are necessary. Look at the increase in users. It can't be easy to manage. Ads keep it free for users. So suck it up. Seeing a few ads is better than paying for it!
  • Kristin
the group 1,000,000 against the new facebook layout has about 1.3 million people in it. Shouldn't this be a big whats up to facebook. some change is good this change it bad. Why aren't they listening?
  • you know what, no one liked the previous version of facebook...but we got to know it and loved it. So, in a few months, people will stop complaining and just go with the flow.
The facebook people aren't going to digress, they're going to keep moving forward with new layouts, designs, and ideas.
And I can't believe some people have actually considered going back to Myspace as a better alternative, that's crazy! That is definitely a step backwards.
Let's move forward, don't be afraid of change!
  • lewis reford
please keep old face book! it is easy to use quicker to use (less cliks of the mouse to get what you want) then the new one! simplicity and looks are why i choce it over the bebo myspace etc it was crisp and cleare there is fare too much going on in the new face book lots of boxes starting here there and every where
  • You guys need to re-evaluate before you jump off a bridge.

How about you guys all watch F8.

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's stupid.
  • Paul is a loser
Paul, do you not have anything better to do than stay glued to your compute for 4 days responding to every post that expresses an opinion that is different than yours? Get a life, get a hobby, get a girlfriend, get something because you are seriously pathetic.
  • We do pay for Facebook in some respects. While many shoot down the advertising argument, users provide personal information and photography, which under the TOS Facebook winds up owning. As to numbers, the Petition group numbers around a million at present, but Facebook puts those who have chosen to be on the new design at 30 million. If there is a 100 million user base, then 70 million either choose to be on old Facebook or are ignorant of the change. Supporters of the new Facebook appear to be in the minority for now.
  • Paul
um customer? being a customer implies you are paying for it which you are not
  • Josh
If you can't keep the old format you loss me as a customer, I simply hate new facebook.
  • Paul
you don't have to worry about being asked if you want to switch, since that soon will not be an option.
  • Alison
I am sick and tired of getting used to new things on facebook and being asked if I want to switch back to the old facebook what if I am perfectly happy with the old facebook I have to change my mind in order for them to be happy about it. That is so ridicolous and I am so sick of it.
  • Joey Phalen
The new facebook is so hard to read!
  • Paul
And you can't say because one group has a million and another group has a million that means two million people don't like it since most members are probably on both groups.

So take some math lessons and try again :)
  • Paul
If you doubt that, take a look at the actual number who signed the petition
  • Paul
you see....people against the new facebook only want to have their side heard, and censor you if you support it - which is why facebook doesn't take them seriously.

They say because a million people join their group that means a million people don't like the new facebook. What they fail to realize is that half of that million are people who just joined to tell em they are idiots.
  • Paul
I'm a big baby who likes to cry at everything and shoot other people's issues down just because I have a keyboard and internet access.

    Also, I smell terrible.
  • graham
I like the old version of facebook, it is easy to understand and use.
The new version is similar to what ebay did back awhile, and that is make it incomprehensible to most users... The griping on the ebay board still continues two years after the change, they lost me as a seller and user... I expect I'll abandon facebook as well.
I think the concept behind the change is to rotate more ads past users so as to improve their bottom line, frankly I don't know why they just don't come out and state the obvious, but then we'd all have a real target to whinge about rather than just a "change" For the record the new face book looks like it is "arse backwards". It makes me crazy as I can't find squat and I hate seeing and being force fed all the activity from others.
If the old version is toast, I'm out of here.
  • Trisha
Like many people that have posted I tried out the new facebook and had a load of trouble figuring out what was what. Many of my applications are just missing. I have no idea where they went or how to find them. Other applications I can find but they do not work properly. I have been trying to figure out how to use the new facebook for about 3 weeks now and have not come to understand it much better than when I started. If facebook wants to make changes that's fine but I think that making so many changes all at the same time is confusing. I have gotten rid of applications because I don't have them in the new facebook. I also go on less cause there is not as much to do if you do not understand the set up. Many people suggested a comprimise.... I am right there with them!
  • Ana
Please let us use the old facebook. It's easier, and no doubt better than the new one!
  • luciie smith
@luciie smith - the old one that is
  • luciie smith
i fukin hate the new face book
    let it be x
  • The way it seems to me, people are arguing over nothing: some people hate the new facebook, while others are more willing to give it a try. I think we can agree there.

What these groups are about is petitioning facebook to keep the choice open to them. Some people don't want to switch, and they don't want to be forced to. These groups aren't about banning the new facebook, or forcing everyone to use the old one. Some people just want the flexibility of having a choice.

I personally hate the new facebook, and if I'm forced to switch to it, I will probably stop using facebook gradually altogether. I suggest those of you who feel the same way about the new facebook should consider doing the same. All it will mean is that facebook has evolved into something that you are no longer interested in.

Some people on this commentboard need to set aside their prejudices for a moment, and look at the aims of all these groups. No one is trying to undermine any one else's opinion, just stop getting offended if everybody doesn't share yours.
  • Cheryl
Isn't CHOICE what we have fought wars and built this country on. We made the choice to join FACEBOOK as the old system and now we are told without our CHOICE and imput that we have to accept the new one. Does any one else see the POWER here or is it just me? If you like the new format that"s your CHOICE but give me and others our CHOICE.
  • Sandra Umpang
    @Megan -

I agree with most of what you said. I got hooked to the old Facebook because of its SIMPLICITY.
The layout was like zen at its purest and uncluttered with everything on a page. Un-techno individuals like myself are not turned off by the machinations of the new Facebook. Easy, fun and interesting.
So what if there are a lot of applications? I say, a person usually have 5-10 favourite ones. So we choose what we really like to keep while keeping the others hidden. I spent a lot of time nurturing my Growing Gifts application and the old FB was just like my little world in the bigWWW. So, those who don't like those applications, just should continue to ignore my applications.
Yes, it's a social network but at the same time, it is a personal page which should reflect the owner as well.
So FB developers, consider these aspects. Facebook's uniqueness was and still is, its simple layout with a dash of individuality.
  • David Hundeyin
I must say that in actual fact, there were loads of people who littered their profiles with loads of rubbish and unnecessary stuff, so facebook had to do something. But they are usually more democratic than this. They could introduce limits, the way they introduced tag limits couldn't they? That said, I must note that it always surprises me how many psychotic, obsessive, immature adult children who find their way here. From all that the paul dude has said, I can deduce that a) we should all shut up or go hang because b) mark zuckeberg and co are some sort of higher life form who couldn't care less about what their users think. I've studied psychology and what I can see written across him in bold letters is LOW SELF ESTEEM. He suffers from a lack-of-relevance complex so he gets a feeling of fulfillment by stalking and upsetting people obsessively which explains the multiple ids. Whoever you are, go get some help. Seriously.
  • Champa
Personally, I love the new facebook but I do agree, they should keep an option for the old facebook so people can keep what they want.
  • Paul
you see what i mean. this is the type of people you have complaining about the new layout.

    No wonder facebook doesn't care...
  • Paul
you see what i mean. this is the type of people you have complaining about the new layout.
  • k
i'm gonna go back to myspace. they give you the choice of using the new or old home page...
  • Tara
    @Megan -
    Megan is absolutely correct!!

Paul - I honestly don't know what possesses you to create false petitions, and harass the members of at least three of the groups against the new facebook! Even going as far as posting AS US! Get a life.. and get the help you need please.... I mean at least THREE groups AND this website!! GROW UP!

And yes... facebook is starting to listen....they have made several changes in the past 48 hours to try and smooth over this change over.... that said. they STILL have a HELL of a long way to go!
  • Julia
Leave the old facebook alone! Let us choose! The new facebook is HIDEOUS and it HURTS MY HEAD WHENEVER I'M FORCED TO GO INTO IT FOR A SECOND! STOP FORCING US INTO SOMETHING WE DON'T WANT! TRY ACTUALLY LISTENING TO YOUR USERS!
  • Nicolas
    The new facebook suckss!!!!
Let´s keep the old one running please!!!
  • Megan
    @Paul -

I gave you all the chances in the world with your original FB account. I was getting a full inbox of complaints about you harassing people.

Interestingly enough, we ARE making a difference. Facebook developers have contacted the creator of my group, asking for outlines of the complaints against the new facebook. An article will be published in a San Francisco newpaper. Time did an article on our group. And right here, tiny MASH has taken an interest. We are making a difference.

Paul, I think you are unhappy that you can't troll as freely as you once did. You'll see all over the place in our group that anyone can voice dissenting opinions. You harassed people and assumed at least three peoples' identities. It doesn't merit you much credibility.
  • Miguel
Listen PIG, get over it, facebook changed!
  • Paul
Well said Aidan, "“social network” which is what facebook is."

That is exactly what facebook is, not a place to try and exhibit your personality by cluttering your profile with apps.
  • I'm all about change when it's for the better. I'm against a mandatory change to the new look because it's a step back. I'm a new facebook user so I'm not even used to the current GUI, really. I hope facebook management makes the right decision because facebook is pretty cool.
  • Melanie
Regarding the comment by tiny that people originally backlashed against the change in the news feed on the original Facebook, I still hate it, and have it set as minimally as possible, and then delete the entries daily. As far as the people who are complaining about the old version's ability to add "crap" to peoples pages, I say people should be allowed to have what they want on their page. You don't have to look at it! I personally have deleted a lot of stuff as the apps have become more obnoxious to use. That doesn't mean that I want someone else telling me what can be on my main page.

I love the old facebook but the amount of crap that people were/are putting on their profiles was just pissing me off. I really like the new facebook because i thinks it more simple and is a btter design for a "social network" which is what facebook is. I use my facebook account to keep in touch with my friends that i have all over the world because i have move around alot. I enjoy the fact that my profiles most prominent feature is the wall and that when i go to someone elses profile i can focus on talking to them on their wall. And if i am so inclined i can click on a simple tab to see all that other useless shit. I am not saying that facebook should force anyone to use the new facebook, but i believe that there should be an option in account prefernces where each person on facebook can choose between the new and old facebooks, this makes so much more sense and it solves everyones problems, it lets the fans of old facebook continue using old facebook, and it lets the fans of the new facebook to conitinue as well and at the same time it lets new users make up their own mind about which one they like better. i think forcing anyone to change is bad, but i doubt that if facebook ignores everyones pettition that anyone will stop using facebook unless the only reason they were on was for the applications they can add. which i consider a waste of a facebook account. and ps to everyone saying the new facebook is more like myspace i disagree, i maintain that the old facebook catered mroe to a myspace crowd with the ability to add so much useless crap to ones page...... with the new facebook the most important feature (in my eyes) is the most prominent.
  • John, never have used facebook. Have you? Is tinymash covering any new technologies to aid the unemployed sector? I've got a friend who's launched a new site called collegeroadshow.com and his looking for capital to swing it nationwide. Got any suggestions? Also, did you see the DVD that's out now, titled 21? Something Jorgensonian about it.
    Diggin' tinymash,
    charlie
  • Keep the old Facebook PLEAASSSEEE!!!
  • Paul
As for apps on the profile....odd that you say you can't have any as my profile has 4 of them on it using new facebook....

again, learn to use it before you complain about what it can't do

Like everything new it takes time to adapt, but in most cases the new 'thing' is actually better when you got used to it. The new facebook is just such a thing. It may feel scary in the beginning having everything on the right side instead of the left but all together it is much more user friendly.

So to all you antagonists: Give it a go, and come back in a month....

    Cheers :D
  • Paul
Thanks for the kind words Megan.

If you didn't try censoring me for not sharing in your opinions on the new facebook everything would be fine. Sorry you can't really argue logically about facebook that you have to ban people who don't agree with you.

This whole subject, petition, and group is a joke. Ultimatly Facebook is going to do what Facebook wants to do and theres not a thing you can do about it unless you have millions to buy them out.

    :)
  • @Heather -

Heather, I agree with you about how the change is too drastic. I'd also like to be given the choice of what we'd like on our profile page.

I DO think that people had way too many applications, and they could cause another user's computer to crash. That was a big problem. I still think that applications should be limited - and yes, I'd go as far to say that people should be allowed one application on their profile page. I think it could be kind of fun - people could rotate their favourite app. every few days.

Again, my perfect compromise is to have my picture, my information, my wall, and my photo albums to all be on one page. With all the free space (from removal of all the apps), I wouldn't mind FB filling it up with their ads.
  • Jordan Darcey
I hate the new face book. I will leave if they force the change on me. It sucks the big one.
  • Elizabeth Fels
From a graphics perspective the ads are now larger than profile pictures. They are intrusive and ugly.
  • Heather
I have to agree with some of the comments being posted; it's not that change is a bad thing, but did it need to be this drastic? Really? I don't think so. I hate my news feed and wall being joined. I don't even read it anymore. I would like to have space for at least one application on my front page. Why not let us choose what is on our profile page? It's supposed to reflect who we are right? So let it! And please, give us back our wall!
  • @Paul -

I wanted to point out that Paul is a troll whom created NINE new identities since last night on FB. He was vile and rude and harassing our members, including myself. Every time I banned him from the group, he created another Facebook account. First he was Paul Nosko. Then he came back as Pauly Wanna cracker. Then he made three more accounts using Paul Nosko again. Next, one after the other - each time I had to ban him again - he created three accounts impersonating me. Lastly he impersonated a strong and active member of the group, Tara. I was swamped with messages complaining about him. I reported him to Facebook after every new identity, so did the other members. We all wrote that he was abusing the Facebook (fake identities take up space, and slow down the site) and impersonating people.

Since using Tara's identity and being banned yet again, we've not heard back from him. I don't know if FB gave him the final boot, or he's taking a break.

I just wanted to let you all know what kind of person this is. Thank you.

    Megan
  • Ok so the changing of facebook isn't the end of the world. So why is everyone up in arms over it? Why the nasty attitudes. People can be soooo rude to each other. I don't get it.

I don't like the new facebook myself. I prefer the old facebook. I am not opposed to a few changes but not all at once please. And if there r going to b changes please let them work. That is the most frustrating thing ever. Now I understand the concern about the news feed situation but this is different. Facebook isn't changing just 1 thing on us at once they are changing several. I liked the news feed. I don't like the new facebook. I tried it for a week and hated it. I couldn't even figure it out enough so that I could leave my friends messages and stuff. I have no desire to use the new facebook. If I can't keep in touch with my friends thru facebook then I have no need for facebook.
  • Ryan Northrup
Although I personally prefer the new Facebook, I still feel that users have the right to use an interface that feels more comfortable to them.
  • Kevan
I am a huge supporter of the "skins" idea. It should be an option to choose new or old facebook layouts and be able to switch back and forth between them.
  • david
DEAR FACEBOOK, PLEASE LISTEN TO THE MEMBERS OF (YOUR) SITE, ((WHO KEEP (YOUR) SITE RUNNING) ), AND GIVE US THE OPTION OF USING THE OLD FACEBOOK, JUST KEEP IT LIKE IT IS NOW, (ONE LINK TO THE NEW FACEBOOK.. AND ANOTHER LINK TO GO TO THE OLD FACEBOOK) IF YOU DID THIS IM SURE EVERYONE WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE. PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION. THANK YOU!!!
  • Nathan
The new Facebook is unbelieveably poor. That's pretty much all there is to say!
The old one is far superior - why change something this is perfectly fine, which 99% of users like? ... maybe to increase profit from advertising? That's my bet.
The new version runs pretty slowly on some computers from what I've read and the mish mash of my Wall and Mini Feed is horrible. I want a separate 'wall' that people can write on - a place where I can see all my messages (oh..like we have now)....I do not want to spend my time navigating round a load of 'boxes' and 'tabs'.
Oh yea, the majority of applications don't function correctly/fit on the new profiles either.
    A TOTAL MESS.
STICK WITH THE FACEBOOK WE HAVE NOW.
  • Tanisha
I dont hate the newfacebook, i just, dislike it. It runs like crap on my comp, and i hate that my wall is the first thing ppl see. i agree with megan, they need a medium here. If i wanted somthin that looked like myspace, id go back to my myspace page. Ive tried the new facebook a couple times now. Thinkin i might have just been havin bad luck or sumthin. Nope. Still dont like it, still cant find half my stuff on it.
  • Paul
oh and not even 100,000 of them bothered with your stupid, do nothing, won't get any results, petition
  • Paul
hmmm I see on the group complaining about facebook around what, 800,000? hardly close to 10 million. And hardly close to the majority of around 112 million facebook users.
  • Michelle
I'm sorry, I misquoted that. Are you saying that the 10 million users only make up 1%? I have to assume, that you were just making up numbers and percents without really studying the facts.
  • Michelle
So 10 million users that are against the new facebook don't make up 1%?
  • Paul
First, they don't even make up 1% of the total number of facebook users so to be honest I really doubt you that them leaving would affect facebook's bottom line in the long run. And even if they did it would be short lived, for every one of them that leaves a hundred more sign up.

Second, as for your comment "They are allowed to their opinions " well by that logic so am i.

Again if they don't like facebook then don't use it...in the long run no one is really gonna care. Its not like the look of facebook is a major world issue like war and hunger. Maybe this is a good thing...maybe this change will force some of these people off their computers and get them to do something more productive with their life or maybe even go outside and do some sort of activity. There's a reason why there are so many overweight people in North America....
  • Linda
All of you attacking the people that dont like the new facebook need to lay off. They are allowed to their opinions and they do have some good points. Forcing the switch on users who do not understand the new layout or "hate" it is just going to end up costing facebook. Users who are dissatisfied leave. Thats how it goes and less users means less sponsors putting the ads on that help, how you say, "pay the bills". Dont attack for their own opinons.
While I am not a new facebook hater I am willing to let them be heard and i wish them the best with getting facebook to listen. I dont completely love all the changes that were made to the new facebook but I am willing to stick it out and see if it doesnt get even better.
  • John
You people are whiny ass bitches. Grow up
  • Paul
    regarding the comment above...

"It is also somewhat insulting to see very clearly that advertising was the main change for the format. Every time you click a “tab” on the new facebook, a whole new series of ads load on the page."

how much do you think it costs to run a site like facebook? of course there are gonna be lots of ads if you want the site to continue to be free to use. How much would you start bitching if they took away the ads and instead started charging you a monthly fee to send messages and what not the way other sites such as hotornot do?
  • Paul
Ultimatly the decision on how the site will look is facebook's. They own the server, domain, script and so forth and are the one's who pay the bill.

This isn't Burger King where its 'your way'. If you don't like the direction facebook is going...well hey, no one is forcing you to use it. Remove your account and join another site. So many people threaten to but the vast majority of you won't because a) your addicted to it and/or b) that is where your friends are and they may not neccesarily follow you to another site.

Another alternative is to take your friends, fork up the cash for a domain and server, and start your own site. And if it happens to catch on just wait until you see what it costs to maintain and operate a site of facebooks calibure and i bet ya you won't put up with people (who don't pay a membership or any type of fee) tell you what you can do with your site.

Its not your right to use facebook. And its not up to you how they run their site....
  • Tina
I understand that with time all things have to change as does facebook. I am not against change but when they make some thing that does not run properly and then force it upon us, i am against that. I tried the new facebook for a week and was not happy with it. Everytime i tried to load my page it would freeze my computer. All we are asking is that they keep the option to switch back to the old facebook open. That way everyone is happy and we would not have to protest like this. Please keep the link to switch back for those of us that don't like the new layout.
  • Christine
I am older than a high school and university student. Also English is my second language.
The old facebook I understand. Have problems with the new facebook. Too compicated for my brain and second languages.
    Thank you.
  • Christine
Please, leave the old facebook alone. I love it the way it is. Don't like the new one at all. Thank you.
  • Æsthetically I don’t mind the new design but I dislike the longer loading time (enough for me to cut down my usage) and the application incompatibilities. Feedback to Facebook has been acknowledged, but nothing appears to have been actioned. I hope these groups manage to get their way: taking your Mashable link and using Facebook’s own claim (as of September 3) that only 30 million have even investigated the new Facebook, only 17 to 37 per cent of Facebook users are supporters or users of the new look, with a majority either preferring or only knowing the old. The 700,000-plus members of the Petition group may well represent a far greater number than they realize.
  • kandace
Please please please leave the old facebook up, Its easiers to understand and its a way better layout!! the new facebook is like everyones elses sites, and you should stay unique and keep facebook the way it is, your going to loose a lot of customers including myself if you force me to use the new layout..thanks for listening
  • Thank you...I do understand that comment concerning the protest about the newsfeed...but it seems people are a lot more fired up about this new layout.

I am one of the two administrators of the group above. I'd like to give you my two cents.

It is a massive change; what people love about the "old Facebook" is the simplicity of the design. It was the difference from other popular networking sites, such as Myspace and Bebo. The old format is simple to use, and I was able to get family members on Facebook when they would scoff at the other sites.

Facebook also had something of a prestige attached to it - it was founded on college students, and seen as a superior networking group to be a part of.

It is also somewhat insulting to see very clearly that advertising was the main change for the format. Every time you click a "tab" on the new facebook, a whole new series of ads load on the page.

The other big reason was the number of applications people had on their profiles. It could be impossible to load someone's page without their computer crashing. However, I think this could have been solved by limiting the amount of applications someone can add to their profile. Nobody really uses all their applications; I don't have that many (and loading my page was never a problem for anyone), but I still could do without most of them.

The purpose of our group is not really to prevent "new" facebook from happening altogether. We KNOW that's not realistic. What we'd really like is to see some improvement on the old format, and to add some of the new features. It's the complete overhaul that has people upset.

My perfect compromise? I'd love to be able to keep my picture, my personal information, my wall, and my photo albums on one page. And I definitely don't want my wall and newsfeed combined, nor do I want to see everyone else's activity to be so prominently displayed - it feels quite stalkerish. I wouldn't mind at all for my applications to be on a separate tab. And by doing this, it would clear up a ton of space of my profile page. I would be content to have that extra space filled with their advertisements. Not all members want the same changes. While Scott Sanders, the other admin., wants colours and skins, I do not. I want the simple "old" Facebook, with a few improvements - improvements that did actually come with the new design!

    - Meg.
  • Hey there. I'm an officer of the Petition Against the “New Facebook” group, and was pointed towards this site by one of the co-owners and editors. This can be yet another way to show the public (and more importantly Facebook) that the vast majority of Facebook users are against being forced to use the new layout and that it would be a bad business move on Facebook's part to force this change upon us. Of all of the blogs and groups and news pages I've seen, the stunningly vast majority of comments are reflecting a negative opinion regarding the new layout, so why not show them in a quantitative way, like with a vote?! Let's make a change by taking this stance!

Good luck, and cheers for all of your support!

    Pip
