Google’s New Strategy In Japan

by Jason Wilk on September 1, 2008

  • Google is clearly losing the search war in Japan. Yahoo has 76% of the country’s search market, which totals 350 billion monthly page views.
  • Google has decided to hit Yahoo and it’s JV partner SoftBank where they have the least penetration, mobile search.
  • Google’s newest Japanese partners, NT Docomo and KDDi au are the number 1 and 2 ISPs in Japan, with 74m subscribers to SoftBanks 15m.
  • Their partners have made Google search the default mobile search engine and are rolling out more and more Google features into their handsets.
  • Both companies are part of the open handset alliance and are speculated to embrace android when it rolls out.

Since the mobile web is wildly popular in Japan, could Google’s mobile strategy be the key to snaking Yahoo in Japan for overall search?
